We shouldn't need a bailout, but the fact remains that the various food banks are getting overtapped, and that is with what I think is a record number of groups trying to help out. However, do you care to argue the point that the shelves are empty because more people are in need AND people are giving less?

I don't think anyone is suggesting a government bailout.  The problem is, those that used to be able to contribute are now finding themselves just making ends meet.  The prices of groceries has risen alarmingly over the  past 6 months or so and just feeding a family is expensive, even without a bunch of extras.  I never buy stuff like soda or frozen ready-to-heat meals, I do a lot of cooking from scratch including cookies every week, soups stews and casseroles, creatively using leftovers (always have done all this) and it still costs me a lot to shop.

I know there are others worse off and I'm pretty fortunate, I'd love to go buy turkeys for a charity or spend $100 for staples to donate but it's hard.  I drop $5 in every SA kettle and I'll put non-perishables in when they're having a collection at the store or school but it's not as much as I used to be able to do and a lot of people can't do it at all.

Here is what I said:  "All of the food pantry's and the food bank need support, that's what we do as Americans.  We don't need a government bail out".

What is your problem?  You are way too caught up with yourself Fred.  Go back to your reading.

If so, CR, then why did they have to shut down?

In a perfect world, you are right. We've had food drives at my kid's school, we've had them at work, and I've been to at least two events over the past month that solicited food....and still we are short.

They are not closing altogether *but* they have suspended their emergency food program.  Still bad enough at this time of year.

I don't know how many people have learned of it, but the Delaware Food Bank, a charitable organization that depends on grant money, has run out of funds and is closing their operations. This group gave 30 lb. boxes of food to needy families. I can't fathom letting an effort like this fall by the wayside. How in the world, particularly at this time of year and in this economic time, can we let this happen? I hope everyone who reads this post takes the time to send them a donation. Even more, I hope everyone sends out an email to everyone on their distribution list, asking for a small donation to help keep this operation going. I know, there are those who'll say "so what". But I ask you, how would you feel if you were in need of food and something like the food bank closed up.
