did you all see in the paper today that they have arrested the young lady who was responsible for the Smyrna High bomb threat---seems she wanted school to get out early---she was 17 yrs old---guess she must have been bored to do something like this.

From what I hear, Polytech and CR also had bomb threats Thursday morning. That is why the response was delayed and the kids were sent home. When will these kids learn? Yes, they cause a lot of havoc and may get a day off, but is it worth it? They will have to make the time up and they almost always get caught. Regardless, the school is absolutely right in taking the better safe than sorry route. This was not Smyrna's first bomb threat, I'm sure it won't be their last.

I got news for you Hartlyboy- Beneful IS cheap food. I wouldn't give that to a dog I don't like let alone one of my own.

Yes, a good police dog that is bomb certified is a big expense- a precertified, already trained dog is going to be in the neighborhood of 10-15k. Plus training for the handler. They don't normally cross train bomb and drug dogs due to the different responses when they find what they are looking for so using the dog they already have wouldn't work.

Uh-oh. I can see the next major expense for you townies. Now you are gonna get a bomb dog added to your revenue collector force. Wait till you see how expensive Beneful is now [bomb dogs don't eat no cheap dog food]. You are gonna have to divert Rte 1 traffic back onto 13 just so's the revenurers can light 'em up and collect those fines.

The reason they were sent home today was the bomb dogs were not available right away. Rather than have the students spend half a day in the middle school gym waiting for dogs to arrive and then clear the building, they sent them home. Smyrna PD relies on outside dogs for bomb detection which is why they had to wait for the dogs to become available from other agencies like NCC and state police.

yep here I didn't same go to school in DE but I did go to school during the turbulent 60s. It seemed every other week we were having bomb scares. We would go outside and wait until the school building was searched  and then be back for our next class.

I have a daughter that attends Smyrna High School.  I write about the bomb threat on my blog The Smyrna Wire at http://smyrnawire.blogspot.com.  In addition to closing school for the day the open house scheduled for tonight is canceled.

Both of my kids have cell phones and attend the high school.  They did call me, but there was no rush to the school as I knew that the school had the situation taken care of but at least it made me aware of what was happening.  However, I did get 2 automated messages from the school, which is great.

And what will that accomplish? Having several hundred kids on the cell phone at the same time calling their parents and thus causing mass panic? Oh, that's a good idea. Then you'll have hundreds of parents rushing to the school to pick their kids up. Makes for all kinds of headaches for school staff, emergency personnel and the general public traveling our roadways.

My son just called home and said their was a report of a bomb threat at the high school now they are coming over to the Middle School. This is why if you can afford a cell phone buy it for your child.Even if it is a bug phone that only allows them to call 911 and two other numbers that you program when you buy it!!
