SEAFORD – Resurrected sights and sounds of the Civil War era will engulf historic Gov. Ross Plantation with the second edition of Seaford Heritage Weekend.
The May 22-24 event, sponsored by the Greater Seaford Chamber of Commerce, will feature living encampments, cannon firings, battle re-enactments, demonstrations, period-style entertainment and artisans along with a pageant, Sunday morning church service, historic vintage car show, various food vendors and much more.
“We are hoping to build on the momentum achieved last year during the first Heritage Festival,” said event chairman Terry Ayers, himself a re-enactor. “Nearly 5,000 people came out over the three days and many of those folks will remember the good time they had and want to return.”
An added twist to this year’s event is an 1866-style baseball game on the plantation’s front lawn, pitting the Diamond State Baseball Club against the 2nd Delaware Infantry. Game time is 1 p.m. Sunday, May 24.
Other entertainment includes the Camptown Shakers, Paddy and the Hostages Irish music, and the Banjo Man strolling the grounds.
Again this year the Civil War Living History Area – featuring displays and demonstrations from the 1860’s – is dedicated to the memory of John "Buck" Owings of Delmar, a re-enactor who died in 2007.
“We are expecting an increase in the number of living historians this year, or re-enactors as many call them,” said Mr. Ayers. “Many told us they were absolutely charmed by the event and the historic mansion grounds.”
Mr. Ayers anticipates the Civil War battle Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. will be a lively affair with an ample number of troops from The 2nd Delaware/Union (The Crazy Delawares) and 7th Tennessee/Confederate as well as the 2nd Maryland Co. H and 18th Virginia Co E.
Cannon firing demonstrations are scheduled both Saturday and Sunday courtesy of Wes Jones and his Richmond Howitzers, Mr. Ayers said.
The Governor Ross Plantation is located at 1101 North Pine Street Ext.
