Stating an Opinion
I believe that the people that say they are embarrassed of Immokalee are under achievers and have no creativity, if they are embarrassed of there home town then make the effort to change your home town.

Hi Okeegardener,
Thank you so much for your response, I see you are interested in positive promotion of Immokalee and I thank you for that. It is wonderful to read some positive changes are being made even if it is in the future but Please, don't stop halfway and don't give up.
There are also a number of people who wish they didnt have to be embarrased to say they are from Immokalee. They grew up there and are raising their families there as well and would not want to live anywhere else. They don't like the long travel to movies and other activities that they feel should be a part of life but will do so willingly.
I have been to a couple of Redevelopment and Visioning meetings and they do hold lots of promise. I have heard of some of the changes, but they are mostly in the "Visioning' stage of many people and not much "Redevelopment" has actually happened or probably will for quite some time.
In the mean time, lots of people that really want a community that they can enjoy are moving away because they dont have any conveniences nearby and its easier to come into town to work and then go home and be near shopping and entertainment areas nearer to their home for evenings and weekends, which is the time they can spend with their families.
Again, thank you for your work towards the improvement of this community.

Hi there Just to Say So!
Thanks for the opinions and great ideas for the Immokalee Area. Change has already begun with the Redevelopment and Visioning Committees quickly building a plan to promote change within and surrounding the area. Many great things are in the works for Immokalee with a new main street development boasting many of the ideas that you mention in your letter. Check with the Eastern Collier Chamber of Commerce office and they can direct you to specifics and also to where you can track upcoming changes to come in Immokalee and the downtown area.
Thanks for answering. Feel free to invite friends, coworkers and family members to join in the discussion or start a new discussion topic!

I think to promote Immokalee first you must make a couple of changes.
A more family friendly Main Street. The businesses already there cater to the male farmworker and that is why that environment was created.
Also, possibly, a bowling alley, a movie theatre, a couple of nice sit down restaurants - some that would be open late at night or open 24 hours, an ice cream parlor, a couple of gift shops, a dance school, a stylish modern bakery and a few more family oriented businesses. Maybe even a nice nightclub and a nice big place for the local high school graduation can be held in town and for the kids not to have travel to Ft Myers or Naples for prom.
It is difficult for the schools to host activities as there is no where for people to go eat or shop if they need something. Teams and families come for football and basketball and other games and only have McDonalds, Wendy's or Burger King that they can go to at night. or leave to have dinner somewhere else and that money doesn't stay in Immokalee businesses.
The Casino is a big plus to the community and that could bring positive feedback but there is nothing else to offer the people that come there from everywhere around.
The Race Track is also a big plus and brings people from many nearby cities and they come from far away and leave in the middle of the night due to nothing is available to them anywhere in town.
There are no other restaurants open and limited hotel rooms with lots of parking spaces, or any other type of business for them to shop in. Why get a room when they are hungry when the races are over and there is no where to go eat before going to bed so they leave.
Also, maybe a 24 hour truck stop and a large discount shopping center would bring jobs and maybe even some money to the community. The truck stop would be a big plus to so many trucks used in the farming side of the community and the trucks that come and go to take the produce from all around.
There are a number of businesses trying to stay alive and maybe helping them update their storefronts and some changes they may need to do and are receptive to, would be a good start.
Also, lately it seems incorporation of the community would be a good idea so more of the money paid in taxes and permits among other fees by the locals to Naples, stays and benefits Immokalee, completely.
I don't think the surrounding communites have allowed Immokalee to change and grow, it would take money and business away from them.

| In the time that I have had an association with the town of Immokalee, I have seen much in the way of growth in the area...Education is the key to growth in any community and Immokalee is geared and going in the right direction with its support of education programs and building technology for the young people. If young people in an area have no where to go with their educations, they will leave and take what they have learned with them, denying the area of the benefit of reaping what they have sowed.

| There is more to a community than football scholarships, yes I know the scholarship money that get pulled to Immokalee it is enormous.Immokalee needs more than that .First they need to clean up main street but they can't Immokalee hasn't been thought of as a cow town for 30 years.,it's a migrant town ,the only draw is the casino and its outside of town.I go there all the time and use to work there all I ever did when I would go to a store is push my way through all the farm workers .Immokalee has never appealed to me .It's just a migrant town....Firefly

| This time of year one obvious positive is how they work so hard to help the high school seniors get into college. The number of scholarships and the amounts of the scholarships are just amazing.

| I am tired of the way many people in South Florida talk about Immokalee. They think it's still the wild west out here. Apparently they have not bothered to visit Immokalee in 20 or 30 years and they just assume that things never change. Our community has seen a lot of change and improvements in recent years. I think we need to do more to really promote the positive things in our community. Any ideas?
