I know Sheriff Whidden and his family personally, through the friendship of my daughter and his. My daughter has stayed over his home countless times and thinks highly of him, his wife, daughter, and son. I have no concerns with him or his family whatsoever. I have a very close relationship with my daughter and am not aware of any incident or anything even questionable in nature. I encourage their friendship 100% because she's a great kid from a good, involved family.
Rather than making accusations, please take it straight to the State Attorney's office. If you truly feel that these type of things have occurred, than handle it appropriately. I can not accuse anyone of lying if I was not involved in the situation, but I do not understand why someone hasn't fully came forward if these sort of things have occurred. If this "rumor" is the truth, then please report them as you would anyone else. If not, then let this hearsay die out. If anything, out of respect for his family.
Otherwise, please be considerate of his wife and children. It hurts me to think of the pain that his wife must be going through. He made the decision to run for office, and his wife supported him, but that does not give the general public right to make personal attacks that directly affect his family. I am a parent of one of the girls who have and will continue to spend the night at his home, and I have no concerns whatsoever. Both Steve and Cassie are very involved parents and I think good role models for when my daughter is there. Their friendship has extended before AND after the time he was elected, and their family is the same as always: down to earth, truthful, respectable, and close knitted. In this day and age, this is good to see.
As far as his role as Sheriff, I am a law abiding citizen so I have not (ever) had a run in with the law, nor ever plan to. So, I can not speak at all on this issue. However, I realize that with a severely depressed economy, meaning that Hendry County has the highest unemployment rate in the state, Sheriff Whidden has his hands full. It's common knowledge that during times such as this, crime is up but budget is down. He's expected to do more, patrol more areas, complete more intensive investigations, but with less deputies and staff. To say that he has his hands full is an understatement.
Give him time. His heart and desire is in the right place, and while he may be a little inexperienced, he's been in office less than a year. It will take time to sort out Lee's mess but Whidden has the motivation and desire to do right. Before personally attacking him, think about the effects it will have on others in his life. Attack his job performance or lack thereof, but leave his family out of the equation. They didn't sign on for the job, he did.

You have my deepest sympathies and have faith. You alone know the man that you married. No one else does.

| Stand your ground, work with atleast a public defender because atleast they know the statues but don't give up, you have to really push them because they do have some many cases but remember the squeaky wheel gets the oil so just don't let them drop the ball.. | Are you still dealing with DCF. If so is it in Hendry County? They are putting me and another family I know through hell right now. Do you have any ideas of how to deal with these vultures?

| Joe Lee is not serving civil papers, he is a road deputy just as he had been. From what I was told there was a short time he was in the civil division but he has been back on the road for awhile now. I think he is patrolling the Montura/Pioneer area.

If you dont then you cant blaim him Blaim your self. Steve Is one good man I have been knowing him for years. and If you got something Bad to say about him them go say it to his face. If it is true. I want to thank you for standing up for Steve In my book he is a out standing Guy I have been knowing steve for a long time. Even when he was a Deupty I can remember at the times he called me to let me no what my kids was up to even if i was out on the road in my truck. I no one thing they will have to make me beleave anything bad about this man .He is very fare And for ever one to no A SHERIFF is only as good as the ones that work for him. He cant do anything if no ones let him no what is going on. I no from Experience if you go t a Deputy with something that is going on they sometime turnther head and dont tell anyone. so how could the Sheriff no about it. I live in Glades co. and that goes on all the time over here. But I do no this. People will make up things just bechouse they dont like them or just to get something going. Steve is the one we need to keep. Around and If you will go talk to him I know from Experience it will be taken care of.

I'm sure there are several employees on this site - it's a good idea to listen to them - they know whereof they speak! And I agree - go to the Sheriff's Office with your questions...they love it when that happens.
I am sure they do just LOVE it when people come in to complain! or ask questions about why one of there deputys did somethin stupid, or plain just don't know the answer to.
Marguritelavon, you spoke sometime back about poor ol Joe Lee. I have not seen Joe is sometime, and I understand they were being pretty snotty with him after the recent change.
Is he doing okay? i sure hope so cause I like Joe.

| Yes it does speak volumes. If anyone new this was going for a minute and did not report it well then you are no better than the person you are accusing. If fact I would say that makes you worse in my book. That's like being told about a murder and not reporting what you were told makes you just as bad if not worse. They are not rumors, they are not asinine and i could give 2 s**ts what Powell said. There is total truth to this when my boy and his friends come to me b/c they are concerned about their girl friends, their platonic girl friends at school. They were in tears beggin me to listen and to be QUIET about it <dont tell anoyone mom, this is what happened to, you fill in the blank> , I have been quiet for over a year, no MORE! IT is really disturbing. I have seen what has happened at school functions for the last few years.
Just a thought, it is public knowledge now!
Buckeye ,Jovia is a Jekyll and Hyde first she support the Sheriff then she accusing him of molestation ,her decision to sit on this for a year if she thought it was true speaks volumes of what type of person she is ,don't you think? I don't beleive it for a minute even though I think the some of the dept. stinks..

| To those who are throwing around the accusations that the Sheriff like's little girls. First off if these Girls really had this happen why didn't some one make a police report when it happened? I know if my child came home and told me a adult touched her I would be at the sheriffs dept as fast as I could get there and making a report NO ONE is above the law. If you didn't think anything would be done because of who he is then go the a neighboring county Like Lee county explain the issue and go from there. Second for those not being hired well maybe there is a reason for this weather it's the budget or maybe they have another reason and last I heard they don't have to tell you why they don't want to hire you. Third- everyone was so happy with Ronnie Lee and his crew but didn't I read not to long ago that his Jail Capt or what ever she was was arrested for stealing money from the county or dept????? SO I wouldn't say they did any better. And for those saying they are harrassing someone every week well as long as the deputys have probable cause to pull them over then guess what they can pull them over and do what has to be done. First people complaine the deputys are not doing their jobs now its they are harrassing so and so. Make up your minds. Personally I would rather see them pulling people over than not. Just remember we are not there to see what he was left with after Ronnie Lee and his crew left. So who are any of us to critisize him. I have known Steve for about 10 years and have never ever heard anyone say anything of the sort of him touching little girls. I have seen him help kids and make many kids feel safe after seeing some things that no child should ever have to see. I don't work for the sheriff and I have nothing to gain I just figured I would put my two cents in since everyone else is. I am not happy about something either but I am giving the man time to get on his feet. Again who ever is saying Steve touched these kids are going to make life hard for his kids and shame on you cause you are no better than him if he had done this. I don't beleave for one second that he would do such a thing. So go ahead and try to tear me down and don't forget to point out my spelling errors and grammer cause we all know how important it is to try and make everyone else look bad try taking a look in the mirror. Well good luck to Steve's family I hope people can relize they are only adding to the problem. Can't we all just get along????

Not a policy but a lying drug dealer poisoning our youth with drugs and only understanding the language they speak, maybe. sometimes you have to seek the level the person is on to communicate.

i agree with shumama. jovia are you the mouthpiece for who ever is running there yap about this on this board? its all he said she said he did they did they say how about either they come on here and start tellin facts from the horses mouth or have them contact say the district attorney or that fdle in talahassee and make a complaint or shut up.

hey i saw the sheriff dad and son at the one shot last night. matter of fact powel was there too and i talked with him. i saw him shake mr whidden and his grandsons hands. so i asked him wheher he was upset with them and he saud no, just the sheriff. he said his dad and his son didnt do anything why would he be upset with them i also asked him point blank about the rumor that everybody is passing on this blog and he said to his knowlege never in the 10 or so years he knew the sheriff has he EVER heard, seen, or otherwise indicate that anything about the rumor was true. he even said it was bulls**t.
now take it he is not happy with the sheriff right now i can tell you that but he did say pretty d**n strong that this was all crap he said its part of the losing elections people drumming up business but rumor was the least of his problems
so stop it people i heard it from the mouth of the man who worked with him

| I do not know Mr. Whidden personally but I think anyone with a brain can put 2+2 together. I have never heard any rumors about this till he was elected sheriff. Why did this not come up during election time? Maybe a disgruntled ex employee? I think anyone with a brain in their head can figure out it is a smear campaign from a miserable vindictive soul. Please do not think people believe this garbage and I wish the best for your family.

money aint the total problem right now. good excuse though. got to start weeding out the vermin and the deadwood. but his playground is only been six months, after all it was he that said during a forum that "he knew all the officers, and who should stay and who should go" when asked by the person at the civic center. well six months is quite long enough to start the process and have it mostly completed i would imagin.
hey rocky, nothing up my sleeve.........PRESTO! ummmmm got nothin.
and by the way yes there are good honest people who work down there. some real long timers too. so dont go assuming i am saying all. just the ones that drag down everyone else andn give the dept a bad rap.
plus the promises he made not only to campaign times, but to people personally. i know of two he said he would hire to their face according to them, and now he avoids them like the plague. they have tried and tried to call him, meet him the works, but nothing. and according to them he has hired some in the meantime so it aint like theere was no money or places for them. they are not happy and i know i would be upset to. just say no if thats what you mean in the first place.
but hey its his party and he can do what he feels is best. just doesnt seem like its going in the right direction to most folks.
hey on another unrelated note has anyonee heard from FYI? hope all is well and nothings gone bad or anything. miss his insight.

| Here it goes aagain, I have also heard rumers about the Sherrif liking to touch little girls. I have no axe to grinde, and just want to protect the kiddos in this area. Many little girls spend the nite at the sherif's house, he must like it, and it stuf is going on someone needs to look in to it.

I believe just as we all have to wait to see what obama is going to do for us that we also have to give Steve the opportunity to clean up the mess Ronnie left. So I have been reading this board for awhile and I have a question for ya'll.
How does a new sheriff with no money in the budget take over a rundown department, that the community doesn't trust, respect or stand behind, turn it around to everyones satisfaction? Answer this and you are part of the solution instead of part of the problem.
I have see (with my own eyes) cops drive by my house more often. I haven't seen anything posted directly related or specific to the new sheriff's actions. So maybe he is doing a good job and maybe a little patience will pay off.
