Just read all the posts to date. WOW! This thing is out of control! I thought we were talking about a happy go-lucky-ape-person-like-thing that frequented several places around the globe and caused some suspicion as to his reality and whereabouts? Kinda sounds like we're talking about Santa Claus. HA! HA! HO! HO! HO! Wait a minute, I'm supposed to be taking this thing seriously! Or am I .............?

And the one thing that keep all those Snow Birds  coming back The Fishing. Till they haul them all away in their RVs full of freezers that is. I have seen 5 freezers in one RV all full of fish. I think every RV should be stopped at the state line and searched when they leave. Make them pull into the weight stations and open up the freezers.

Next thing you know they will be trying to Kidnap our Skunk Ape.

Alright, Okeechobee is a small rural town. Just south of the bible belt but could easily be included into it.

What are the main attractions here?
MudFest
Rodeos
Wal-Mart
Hunting
ATV Driving
Cattle Drive
War Reenactment
Speckled Perch Festival
etc.
etc.

What did we absolutely "need" to have?
Agri-Civic Center

Yeah, this is a redneck town. And if you've been here more than 5 months you know it.

Its not a bad thing, just a fact.

A "redneck" is a farmer who has a sunburned neck because he works outside most of the time. More than likely, the term "Redneck" came from a group of miners in Appalachia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Blair_MountainHe works hard to support his family. And while some of them my not be as well educated as I am, I have found that I can learn from them, because there are different ways of being smart. I believe in that alsoIf you keep an open mind and don't judge people, you might be surprised what a great place this is to live.  And if you listen to others and weigh what they say with an open mind, you might catch a problem BEFORE the ACLU gets involved ;)And when your car is stuck in the mud on the side of the road, it's a great thing to see a truckload of those "Bubbas" jumping out of their trucks to help you out. I must confess, the last situation I had, most people passed me by.  However a group of Mexicans pulled over, and were most helpful. As for the Skunk Ape, we are having a great time joking about it and have some of the younger kids on the lookout for him. :D

I'm so glad someone said it because I met a girl who is related to the original "skunk ape" dude and she told me tales of it.

Of course I can't back it up, I'm just telling what I've heard.

I would have to say judging by the palmettos ,the one in front is a yearly bear and the other is a dog:D

You heard it here folks

One of the Commisioners of "Bubba Land" says we have the right to be as backwards as we want to be.

As backward or in your case as close minded. Because we do not try and change the way you are, It is you who try and change things here. Leave or deal with it. I mean isn't everything bigger, better and cheaper there? Yet here you are. We don't move there and try and change any thing,,,oh yeah we don't move there at all. There is nothing there we want. Come to paradise and complain, some people can never be satisfied.

Really? You don't see my point?

The forums made a joke of the Skunk Ape but the paper went along with it...EVEN THOUGH not everyone in the town was in on the joke.

I never criticized the paper, I buy it everyday and often see my posts under speakout. I just think that the Skunk Ape isn't front page news.

I'm sure there is but, I'm not smart enough to come up with it. As you can probably tell grammar is not one of my strong points, I get by with just trying to be understood, and spell check when I remember to use it. ;)

You misunderstand me. I am not saying that Okeechobee is filled with honkeytonk morons, I am saying that is how the outside world sees us.

And if you will read the original few posts and the actual skunk ape thread yu will see that it is a joke, people are using it as a joke, a joke not to be taken seriously.

You know, like Ha Ha.

Well, my point was, the paper took this joke and made it out to be like some genuine investigation.

Aren't we still at war?

Aren't there more pressing issues to be writing about.

There has been a couple of legit pics that seem to show an ape like man covered in fur.  Hard to tell really.

The Seminole and Micasuki Indians have heard the legend of the apeman for as long as anyone can remember.  They have a name for him that I can't remember but it means "tall hairy man"  The ledgend is that he is arund to protect them and you are to do him no harm.

This is what the history channel reported not something I made up

So the question now is, does ehe exsist or is he just a ledgend?

OMG he just ran acrross my back pasture and rode off bareback on my horse!!!!!!

UH OH...I think GoldenGirl knows me, she used my first name, dead give away.

First of all I misunderstood your post. I thought you were agreeing with my other post sometime ago. I see now that you were not.

First of all, As many here will agree I'm far from perfect.

Second no where have I complained about the paper printing a Skunk Ape story the only thing I said is that there would be more sightings now that it hit the paper. So you must have me confused with some one else, but you seem easy to confuse.

I was raised here most of my life, and while some of may feel I might not be one to try and set an example of who this stereotype of an Okeechobeeian is not. I do. I do not listen to country music, I have all my teeth, I do not concider getting muddy fun. My dog is not a Pit Bull, I do not drive a pick up with Get-R-Done on the windshield. I don't wear a cowboy hat or boots. I have no cars on blocks in my yard. I also know a lot more people that also have none of these things. On the other hand I know a lot that do. I also know some that do and they live in Ft. Pierce, Stuart, West Palm,Miami, Ohio, Michigan,  EVERY WHERE! there are all kinds of people in every place. But can any of them lay claim to having there very own SKUNK APE?

LIGHTEN UP this is a fun thread, any one who can't see the humor in it must fit the description of a red neck more than any of us do.

flteacher wrote: Did you read the two posts I quoted?  Where the message included referring to Okeechobians as drunken backwoods hillbilly morons and perpetuating the stereotype of "backwoods redneck Okeechobee" by other forum members. Hardly proof that "outsiders" believe that to be the case. Your point wasn't proven, sorry.

"Do you know that the power of suggestion is powerful indeed? By you putting in print that outsiders have said opinion of us, you suggest to others who may not know better, or question what you say, that this is how others feel about us."  You give my posts a lot of power to influence the thinking in others with whom I have never met. Untrue, I give them the flip side.

Regarding what outsiders who have the image of Okeechobee described previously no, it is not hearsay it is what I have personally heard.  One particularly memorable wise remark from a former coworker when I announced I was quitting and moving to Okeechobee was "Do they have electricity there yet?"

Obviously, you just want to bicker and attack me personally as you have numerous times in the past and with many others in different threads.  As have you. I think you're the front runner though. Didn't you have a huge debate with MSF, chobee buckeye, voicereason, okeegator, and countless others? Your position on the gay straight alliance sure is winning you any friends in this town. Remember I'm sticking up for Okeechbee citizens, this community, the Okeechobee News, and the school board--you know, the ones you keep tearing down. So, on that note this nonsensical debate has run it's course for me.  I am sure I will have the honor of you finding fault with one of my posts in another thread soon. Only if you trash the school district, the teachers, the News, or the community!!!! Until then have a good night.
