I am in agreement with you Okeechobee is full of genuine, good hearted people. I wish the outside world would hear about all these good people and the good many of them do for the community. No, they read locals are seeing the skunk ape and lest we forget the national attention focused on Okeechobee recently by a moron who jumped in alligator infested waters in the middle of the night resulting in the loss of his arm.
Well....some people HAVE recently had sightings of something they believe to be skunk ape, and a feckless drunk DID get his arm bit off at Nubbins Slough....would you prefer that the news didn't report what was actually going on here? I would think media censorship would be more of a crime than actually reporting the truth. Not to say, there aren't some less savory aspects to the local newspaper, chief being some of the "good ol' boy's" comments in speakout.
We are a quiet and weird little town. No denying it. If you live here, you know, not much goes on, and when it does, it usually isn't the norm' one would "expect". Okeechobee is Okeechobee. There are weird people. There are caring normal people. Welcome to the world. The only reason we think so much about it is because there's not really much else to do in this town except go to a bar, fish or browse Walmart. Alot of time for contemplation. Learn to embrace this place where you are located. You're stuck here for the time being. And that's not so bad. =)

Did you read the two posts I quoted? Where the message included referring to Okeechobians as drunken backwoods hillbilly morons and perpetuating the stereotype of "backwoods redneck Okeechobee" by other forum members.
"Do you know that the power of suggestion is powerful indeed? By you putting in print that outsiders have said opinion of us, you suggest to others who may not know better, or question what you say, that this is how others feel about us." You give my posts a lot of power to influence the thinking in others with whom I have never met.
Regarding what outsiders who have the image of Okeechobee described previously no, it is not hearsay it is what I have personally heard. One particularly memorable wise remark from a former coworker when I announced I was quitting and moving to Okeechobee was "Do they have electricity there yet?"
Obviously, you just want to bicker and attack me personally as you have numerous times in the past and with many others in different threads. So, on that note this nonsensical debate has run it's course for me. I am sure I will have the honor of you finding fault with one of my posts in another thread soon. Until then have a good night.

This is to the Okeechobee News Staff.
Did we really need the full front page story on the skunk ape?
The outside world already sees us as drunken backwoods hillbilly morons.
Now we need a cryptozoological discovery also?
Then you skipped right over Patriot's post expressing the same feeling PVT and I have regarding how the outside world views Okeechobee. I feel it was an intended joke. None the less, the impact of the article is perpetuating the stereotype of "backwoods redneck Okeechobee". The article relates "local speculation" about possible events , which translates to the rest of the "outside" world, that we are still mentally stunted enough to entertain the conversation of Bigfoot! How ridiculous.

As far as your challenge I get out and volunteer my time to benefit the community been there done that! School, 4-H, baseball, soccer, Girl Scouts, Wooden Jungle, scholarship drives, etc. The hours I have spent over the years in the park during the Labor Day and Speckled Perch festivals raising funds for one of these non profit groups equates to days of volunteer time. I now support children's groups donating money or buying their fundraising products.
Expecting our newspaper to print somewhat intelligent articles, run spell check and get the month right isn't asking to much. Personally, I refuse to lower my standards to accept what they produce as even satisfactory. I stand by my opinion the Okeechobee News is an embarrassment to the citizens of Okeechobee.
What makes you think that outsiders have this "dumb, backward idea" of people in Okeechobee? Do you know that the power of suggestion is powerful indeed? By you putting in print that outsiders have said opinion of us, you suggest to others who may not know better, or question what you say, that this is how others feel about us. So once again, you've put a notion in people's heads.
I'll wager that you won't be able to prove that others have this negative opinion of people in Okeechobee. I'd like actual proof please, not the word of your friend's sister's boyfriend's cousin who heard it from his grandmother's neighbor who moved from Moore Haven after having lived in Buckhead Ridge for 14 years.

Man, you said it! That picture wasn't even a "Photoshop" job, it was just a palm tree with a head of long dark hair, with a picture of a primate on top. By an "anonymous" photographer, at that! My dad was doing that triple exposure stuff back when I was a kid.
Front page picture? The only one who is benefiting is the guy who owns the "Skunk Ape Gift Shop" mentioned in the article.

As a public face of Okeechobee they do constantly reinforce the dumb backward image outsiders have of Okeechobee.
The only person I know of who has a dumb, backward image of Okeechobee is YOU. You insist upon telling us how bad the newspaper is, how bad the teachers and administrators in this district are, and how everyone views us as dumb and backward.
I happen to think the people in Okeechobee are some of the most genuine, good hearted people I've ever met. Forgive me for being so protective of the people here and our school system. I admire those who work so hard for the children of this community.
The people of Main Street are a perfect example. They give their time and effort for OUR community. I challenge you to get involved in this community, donate your time, and become active. You could help to change our community for the better instead of constantly complaining about it.

Not necessarily true. It's all in how you approach it. Look at the Pacific NW (Washington, Oregon) and Canada. These two areas have the highest sighting rating in North America, and I don't see alot of people going around calling them all redneck whack-jobs. If we approach this as the possibility that it's a real animal (because that is all it would be, there are no monsters under your bed or otherwise) and make observations calmly, collectedly, and rationally (no pitchforks/torches/Dave Shealy) then I don't think it'll be anything more than a little extra attention for our area and maybe a chance to contribute to an actual scientific discovery of an unknown/hidden animal.
Not saying that it's not a little hoax or an unidentified mushroom picker, but generally shouting "lunatic" or "liar" to everyone that exhibit's a different opinion than yourself, represents insanity a bit better than allowing the possibility that something exists/happens that you're not personally aware of. Once again, it's all in how we handle it.
There's alot to the world that we're not aware of yet. We know that South Florida is capable of sustaining a breeding population of primates.

The Everglades and South Florida just might yet surprise you.

| Shaved and or bald heads are not politically or socially friendly. The "Skinhead" hangover is still in effect. Regrettably, some people still take " hair management" as an indication of the person inside. How lost are those that do not truly see!

The area where the Skunk Ape sighting was reported is just before S.W. 67th Street. In the past couple months, three houses on S.W. 67th street have been raided and found to be marijuana grow houses. Is there some connection here? Maybe the 'Skunk Ape' was a cleverly disguised undercover officer who has been keeping a watch on what is going on late at night on S.W. 67th Street.
Now ... who at the Sheriff's office is tall enough to wear a Skunk Ape costume?

No, you got it wrong. Bums get sweaty and stinky and don't bathe regularly. Skunk Apes on the other hand bathe in the fresh water of the lake and river. The only time they get a little raw in the scent department is when they are wet. Kind of like a big old shaggy dog.

Wait -- you're saying everything written in the blogs isn't true? People could be -- gasp -- having a little fun? Making a joke or two?
Next you'll claim the guy who runs the Skunk Ape research center is just pretending there are skunk apes so he can sell T-shirts and bumper stickers ....

| Today in the area between 48th and 67th (area of alleged skunk ape sighting) there is a really bad smell that is not a skunk smell. I suspect it may be sewage spill, but perhaps the Skunk Ape detectives would like to check it out!

| For those who think they have smelled the Skunk Ape. if it smells like a Skunk it was a skunk. The Skunk Ape of the 70s was said to stink not smell like a skunk it was suppose to smell more like compost.

| If the skunk ape is like the other wild animals living in Popash Slough, he'll probably be hiding. They don't like loud noises. Someone should call that guy on the radio 95.5 who is always talking about Bigfoot. Maybe he could come over and look for the Skunk Ape for us.

I haven't heard of anything happening. Thats wierd isn't it?
Bobby and I are hosting a Karaoke Show (6 to Close) at the American Legion Post 64 on SE 2nd Street. Open to the public. Come on in and have a Great time with us.

Thought I better post this as it is now incorrect. The American Legion Post 64 has decided to close at 6 PM on July 4th so BP Productions will not be there hosting the Karaoke Show this week.

Well...Ribs, Tater Salad, Roasted Corn and Sweet Tea is a given. I guess just leave the glades season and hot sause on the table and let him spice to his own taste.
Just leave it all on ice out there on the table. (and you can bet my web cam faced in that direction!)
