We've been in the woods along time and never seen hide nor hair of the thing, however there is a man that lives not far from the Big Cypress Res.,and if he said the sky was falling he would have my attention,a quite ,honest man, They feed the deer and turkeys, hogs etc. year round,he said he was going to a feeder one day to fill it up and there was something under it and it stood up and walked in the woods, this man kept on driving ,didn't stop,he said he didn't know what it was,he knew what it wasn't ,a bear.My daddy has always said our family has been in these woods from Little Marco north since 1830s, don't you think if the skunk ape was around somebody would have seen it.I don't know Last edited on Tue Jul 1st, 2008 07:51 pm by Firefly1958

| Good idea, but how would you prepare it, rare, sauce or no sauce, are they vegitarians, wine, beer, or sweet tea? Just have to let them fix their own.

Your welcome. Humor and Legends are great.
Here is a question...To be on the safe side, if we BBQ should we fix a plate and leave it on the picnic table? Just in case he is out there reveling in the scents were providing.
I have never met one but I sure wouldn't want the first encounter to be with a hungry one!

The Tarzan's were filmed up in The Ocala area they used the springs around Silver Springs for the under water sceens. It is true that many primates were left in the area from the films and thrived there for many years after.
As far as a Skunk Ape... I believe nothing I hear, Half of what I see, and everything I say. I've never seen one. Just remember the stories from the 70s. Speak Out printed the story today so I'm sure we'll hear about more sightings.

I've been seeing a lot of dead cows in that pasture where the big brick house is. Every day, as I go to Lake Placid, I look over to see if there are any more cows, and that's when I saw it. At first I thought it was a big bull trying to mate with a cow, but when I looked closer, I only saw one cow, and I thought it was strange for a cow to be standing on its back legs like that. I kept looking and then the "cow" ran away on two legs. That's when I knew it wasn't a cow. It was the craziest think I ever saw. That's when I almost drove off the road.
You know, I didn't put 2 and 2 together, but I have been smelling skunk up and down that road. I even remarked to my wife about how there seemed to be a lot of dead skunks lately and maybe it was mating season or something. I never did see a skunk, I just smelled it. This is freaky.

| Agreed, But maybe that could be how it originated. I saw an animal out on 70West one night around 2pm, big and black. It ran across the road between my vehicle and another, our head lights against each other made it hard to see. I figure it was a florida black bear; but you put a theory out there and simple siteings like that can keep it going.

And yes, the original story might have very well been something like that. I'm just convinced that no such animal exists today. Maybe for a year after it got loose from filming but not much longer and it surely didn't reproduce.

Maybe for a few months after filming. Then it would die of inability to adapt. Which is why there are no apes in the Everglades, they can't survivie there.

| The Skunk Ape was a big deal for awhile in the 70s, Back when The Bigfoot craze was going on. I think that Florida was just wanting their own Yeti to claim. It was suppose to stink, but not sure if the smell was exactly that of a skunk. I have never seen nor smelt one so I'm not sure.

| I have heard the stories about the Skunk Ape but have never seen one. But driving SR 70 West, just before the turn for Lazy 7, I have often smelled something bad. I just assumed that a lot of skunks get run over there. although I never saw a dead skunk on the road. But thinking about it ... maybe it was your Skunk Ape!

No, but my daughter does. Then again, she is worse with common sense that I am.

We didn't see anything, and I had never heard about this Skunk Ape Fellow...but just maybe he had been wandering around the Okeechobee Airport last night? Ya never know!

The Skunk Ape is the Florida version of the Yeti or Bigfoot.
