I doubt our shelter could eliminate any unfortunate mistakes from happening at animal control or anywhere else.

What we will be able to do, is give people other choices of what to do with strays, unwanted, misbehaved, and unable to keep, etc. pets.

We will help with food, training, healthy sheltering, and low cost altering to keep the unwanted pet population under control, adoptions to give deserving pets another chance to a good life.

We will not be funded by the county. This is a community citizen venture supported by the community to benefit the people & pets of the community.

We need your support!!! Please sign up to be a volunteer today, no experience necessary we will train. This is a volunteer only, no money compensation is offered, but it sure does make you feel good. Interested people can email me at Reunitepets@aol.com

We are looking for a facility to shelter the animals, if you can offer any help please email me. Until we get a facility we must depend on volunteers to house the pets as fosters until they are adopted.

Maybe those cats could be put on a post asking for a forever home.

When we get our group together they can be surrendered to us.

This post is for the startup of a shelter, we are lining up foster parents for animals to be adopted into a forever home.

thank you

For anyone on this thread who is interested in fostering, I know of someone with two female cats, indoor cats, fully vetted, spayed and microchipped. They are approx. 1 year old, anyone interested in fostering, please let me know. Assistance with food for them will be provided if needed. Her son is allergic to them.

Hello Everyone,

I am writing this post in hopes of getting more of you who are interested in this venture.  As we all know, Okeechobee needs this shelter to illiminate what happened at the Animal Control several weeks ago with "Oreo."  I am the on the board of this extememly exciting adventure.  We are still in need of several board members as well as persons who are willing to help out with temporary/permanent fostering for those that we may or may not have room for.  I am in the process of contacting people with a little bit of property that can have a temporoarty kennel or run placed so that we can have a place for these wonderful animals.  For those of you who have not met Belinda, who is our president of this endeavor, she is a wonderful woman who has more energy than a cat on a hot tin roof.  She also takes in strays, has experience in clipping those dogs and cats that are so matted that it is the only thing you can do.  She volunteers her time and her own monies to do all of these things and many more.  We are presently in need of persons who can assist us in getting the by-laws fine-tuned,  and help in getting us started with all of the other rules and regulations that go along with this type of program.  We are going to need people who can help in picking up strays, donations of dog/cat dishes, blankets, fencing materials for kennels, dog/cat food, kennels that can be used to transport these animals to our shelter or to a vet, etc.  The list goes on ad infinitum.  Please contact Belinda at reunitepets@aol.com so that we may get this up and going.  If you don't have a job and need something to fill in your time, this would be a great help in your effort to keep yourselves from becoming stagnant in this world of unemployment.  You will also reap the benefits of knowing that you may have just saved another life.  Jump on board!!!!!

So many animals are dumped in areas, abandoned, and euthanized at animal controls, etc. the main issue is spaying and neutering, later on we will not see so many unwanted animals who end up at shelters and die just because they were born.

If you are interested , please contact me, first issue is getting a low cost spay/neuter program in this county.

Hi, can you post again what is going on with this? With all of the talk about animal control and all, we need to do something. Many people may be interested now, I also know you are talking about doing a no-kill shelter. We need to get the word out more.

Come on people, let's get going on this, join this group and let's make a difference.

Yes, this will be a no kill for space rescue shelter for domestic animals.

No kill for space means that no animal will be euthanized to make room for another animal. We will need people to do short term fostering and long term fostering, please email me if you can help the animals get a second chance to a loving home.

The animals will be spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

Our polices will be posted for the public to view very soon.

We are looking for a facility, anyone know of any available?

For now, if you need assistance with cost of spay/neuters of your pets, you can contact Okeechobee Vets and ask them about the "Stray No More" program. Take advantage of it, get your pets spayed and neutered.

yes, this all needs to get done. I have been talking to several people while in town, many think the idea of getting FLYERS out about the cause is very important. Several businesses are willing to let us post them in their front wndows. Is there anyone willing to donate their time, or help in doing flyers?

Thanks!

I feel this is a very important subject, therefore I am reposting.
Maybe it was lost in the shuffle with the holiday weekend festivities.

Subject; A No Kill rescue shelter for Okeechobee’s Pets           From the desk of: DOGANGEL

We need people to volunteer service with experience in management, fund-raising, accounting, animal handling, or animal welfare to organize a Humane, non kill for space, nonprofit animal shelter here in Okeechobee.

We’re incorporating as a non profit 501 (c) 3 tax-exempt status; we’ll need to have a board of directors.

If any of you are experienced or think you would be good in any of these areas above please email me ASAP with information about you, and what you have to offer.

Following is a basic list of the procedures we should follow;

Hold a team meeting for volunteers willing to help with the initial organizing of the corporation.

We will need to submit our mission statement, bylaws, and articles of incorporation as well as a list of our board of directors yet to be chosen.
This can be a complicated process so we need to try and retain an attorney, if possible have one volunteer service.
Perhaps there's an animal-loving attorney in our area willing to represent our organization, retired or not. If so, please email me.

Hold a group meeting of general volunteers.

Everyone interested in volunteering, or donating to the cause, please email me with information about, who you are, what you want to do to help, and how I can contact you.
Thank you

Hello -

Every year, Emergency Management is provided a scope of work by the State which we must address, adhere to, or accomplish.  In the draft form of next year's scope of work, establishment of a pet friendly shelter is listed as a goal.  So we are looking for the best locations to accomplish that before it becomes a requirement.  I will have more information available in the future.

We need people with experience in management, fundraising, accounting, and animal welfare to help get the rescue off the ground and keep it running. We are incorporating, we  will also need a board of directors. If any of you think you are good in any of these areas please email me ASAP. Reunitepets@aol.com
Of course we need other volunteers and help in other areas too.

Our post has had over 371 viewers but,  only 8 willing to commit to help, I wonder why that is?

Here is how we start the process after organizing a team;

Develop our business plan. With help from our team, we'll need to write out our bylaws, mission and goals. Define roles and responsibilities.

Then file for incorporation as a non-profit to qualify for the IRS's 501 (c) 3 tax-exempt status.
We will need to submit our mission statement, bylaws, and articles of incorporation as well as a list of our board of directors.
This can be a complicated process so we need  to try and retain an attorney.
Perhaps there's an animal-loving attorney in our area willing to represent our organization pro bono. If so, please speak up!
Everyone interested in helping us to start a shelter that is no kill for space, and nonprofit please email me with some information about, who you are, what you can do to help, and how I can contact you.
thank you

Welcome Michael!! It will be great to have you on board.  I think the time  is here to advertise our group and have a meeting. Will post it as soon as it's set up.  Calling paper today. I need a bunch of suggestions on the name, dogangel has already submitted hers, once they are all in, we can discuss them at the meeting & choose a name. Next comes the non-profit Inc. paperwork to do.  Some of you think real hard at how interested you are because once we do paperwork, we will need board members, whomever is interested in that can let us know at the meeting. Hope to see all of you soon! Plus friends of yours that are interested.

Michael, do you have a plan in place for the pet friendly shelter and location? This is a must, many people will not leave their homes if they have no place for their pets.

thanks!

We would be happy to help your department in anyway we can, once we get this mission up and running. All of us want the same thing, to help the animals.

Yes, having a "pet friendly" shelter is something our town needs. I'm glad to hear your department is working on that.

You are welcome to attend our meeting. I'm sure that you could bring good ideas to the table, it would be greatly appreciated.

Keep up the good job chasing those skeeters down. lol

Hello -

Once you establish a group and a mission statement, please let me know.  I would be happy to keep your group on record and request your support for Emergency Support Function 17 (Animal Protection).  We currently do not have a county branch of the State Agricultural Response Team set up, and I would like to see this accomplished by the end of next year.

Also, we will be making a push to develop a "pet friendly shelter" here in Okeechobee, and your group's assistance would be much appreciated.  Please call me if you, as a group are interested.

4ThePeople,

Could you possibly list those persons interested so that we may be able to make sure that no one is left out by mistake?  I have been in the process of contacting people who are interested in this endeavor and would also like to include them.

By the way, my kittens will be 4 weeks old tomorrow!!!!  They are getting so cute.  Starting to play and get out of their box.  I had to enclose them a little more so that they aren't stepped on by my large service dog.:D  If any one is interested in buying one of these beauties, please e-mail me at cbirgholtz@yahoo.com  They will soon be ready and I do have 1(one) bobbed-tail.  They are all blue-eyed and have siamese markings.  The mother was going to a shelter and I saved her because I love siamese cats.  Siamese cats are very loving and like to get close to one person usually.  These are seal-point.

Again, be sure and let me know when the first meeting will be.  As I stated before, I am really looking forward to this.

Reggie, thanks so much, please pass this info on to others you know who may be interested, even if it's only ideas they can offer.

we want to have a meeting eventually as soon as we get a good group of people together, looks like we have 7 now counting myself and Dogangle.  Once we meet, we can figure out our first goal and move on.

Spoiledbullygirl, FLA GIRL, Southerngirl, and designdiva could you also pass this on to everyone you know, see who you can bring on board as interested parties.

thanks!

"I will help"

There is a definite need in this County for both a no-kill shelter as well as low cost spay and neuter program.

I have taken in strays and had them fixed and have found homes for several dogs and cats over the past 10 years that I have been in this County. I have even went to Animal Control and adopted animals only to find them suitable homes. Unfortunately, I am not able financially to do this anymore at this time, but I am willing to help in any way that I can.

I am so happy to see people responding to our animal needs.

We need many more volunteers and support before spending money to do anything. When we have no less then 10 to 12 dependable volunteers we can hold a meeting to pick a name, plan a fundraiser (to pay for the filings), put a plan together for the shelter, get the 501c (3) non profit status paperwork started. So, if you know of anyone interested in saving the animals, please pass on the info.
Anyone know of an attorney who would be interested in volunteering time to wade us through the red tape.

This is not a task we can conquer overnight, but it can be done. Those of you who are volunteering to help please email me so we can have a more personal contact.

I personally want to get a no kill shelter started ASAP, with the low cost spay and neuter to come later.

thank you, B
I can be contacted privately through this email address; reunitepets@aol.com
PS Our mission is to save the lives of felines and canines, I don't have any concerns or knowledge of a ferret lady.

Try Myspace.Make a page post blogs and you will find people who care.I own pitts and I have found people who donate time and money to help the breed succeed.I have also found places to go and socialize my pitts. some are famouse and donate thier name ,time and money to save this wonderful breed that is so often mis understood.I found a group of people who helped save the dogs in the Micheal Vick case. They retrained, loved and helped them get adopted.feel free to check out some of the links and my friends on my page if this will help you get and idea how to work the system. You can have the girls make the page post the pictures and make blogs and bulletins that will work in thier favor tho help people become aware of what they are trying to do.Good luck

The non profit for the state will be the beginning.  That isn't real expensive. As for the 501 status, it isn't that much if you have someone volunteer to do the paperwork.  Dog food or cat food companies aren't going to donate until we have a 501-c-3.  No vet is going to donate anything unless we have it also.  I have a vet who is willing to do lost cost spay/neuters if the people qualify, meaning they would have to be in the low income bracket. We would have to take applications. Low cost meaning $17.50 for a male, and $35 for a female cat, I would have to get the prices on the dogs. The person would have to combo test the cat, heartworm test the dog, and pay for shots. It can still get costly. Dogangel says that the humane society will be offering low cost altering soon.  Right now, Okeechobee Vet works with "Stray No More" who helps people with altering fees also.

the lady that does ferret rescue has stopped taking in ferrets, but they were never found in poor conditions. Your information is a little off unless it's a different person doing ferrets. I know there are a couple of others in town doing ferret rescue also. The person that called on her was someone not living in Okeechobee, it was someone who she had known and they had an argument.  They called on her just to aggravate her.  Animal control had been out one other time about her horse, of course there was nothing wrong with the horse either. She does have cats and she gets all of them spayed/neutered, shots, combo tested, etc.  The St. Lucie shelter doesn't give her food that I know of.  I know that she does it all alone, has no help and people dump animals in her area all of the time. Someone else in her area takes in the dogs that are dumped. What was it that you were unhappy with as far as her ferrets? She has closed and only dealing with the animals that she has at this time.

We need to pick a name and start the organization, get it advertised and go from there in raising funds for the mission.

I know right now it is tough to become non-profit, the girls have been trying with the horse rescue and it cost about 2500.00,

Heres a suggestion,

If we can get a vet to do check-ups for free, start a web site for these animals for all to see, then come up with a low cost spay & neuter facility, I know most charge about 50 dollars for the procedure which beats 160.00 as an average....maybe even get ahold of a dog food rep like purina to see if they would be willing to donate so many bags of food per month....

we need to be carful with this, there is a lady that says she is a ferret rescue, and I know animal control has beencalled to her on several occassions, due to the animals looking poor, from what I can understand she lives off about 500.00 per month and the st lucie shelter provides her with food for them, I have spoken with her in reference to the ferrets and I do not agree with the way she does them, but thats just me, having 3 horses 3 dogs a cat a puppy and 2 kids and 7 acres to care for I stay pretty busy,

designdiva, I know of one vet I may be able to talk to and get some kind of results. I do animal rescue and I am overloaded right now, this is why I decided to start this thread and try to find a way to make a difference in this county.

I think starting a no-kill facility is great, but I think we have to take baby steps with this, one step at a time, the main reason I started the thread is to try and get a group together and see if we can get a low cost spay/neuter program in this county.  A no kill facility will be good, but first we have to help do something with getting the numbers down and the only way to do that is spaying and neutering, won't see results right away, but will eventually. Then when we have a no-kill facility, we won't be so over crowded.

Also, I work with a group that pulls animals from a Georgia animal control to keep them from being euthanized. I would love to try doing the same thing here, we need to get animal control to work with us and let us post pictures of the animals to help find homes or foster homes for them instead of killing so many.

Once we all get to meet, I think we can come up with some great ideas between us all and start this ball rolling.

Dogangel is helping me with a lot of things also. We must get a large group together , name the group, and form a non-profit corp. I am already non-profit, but this would have to be separate from my existing one.

This can be done, it will take time, but it can be done.

thanks

Dogangel....May I make a suggestion to maybe help get the ball rolling in the right direction.......... have you contacted say any of the local established Vet offices that already have the facilties to see if they would be willing to be part of the network ??

Aquisition of land , building etc is a major undertaking and I believe the need is immediate here in Okeechobee and it would be nice if we could have a vet step up to the plate and offer some assistance................Then we ( citizens of Okee) could then offer our volunteer services IE..bake sale...I can BAKE... car washes.....yard sales ..rummage sales....auctions etc... to help offset the expenses of running this clinic/ shelter here in Okeechobee...We could request from our local Vet Supply Salesperson for some possible donations to also help defray the cost of medicines..

Please add me to your list to help.......my email address for communications offsite of Newszap is    lapdraft@hotmail.com

Diva :D

And folks remember...Animals are unable to speak, therefore we need to be their voices......... Together I am sure we can accomplish this mission.......

Are you saying yes, to the question of; would you support a no kill shelter with volunteering, etc.? We can make it happen with the help of the Okeechobee community.

General comments to this post a welcomed!

Though encouragement is needed and appreciated, anyone offering to volunteer please add "I will help" in your post.

We need to know who is willing to give in some way to the mission, such as volunteering, funding, etc.

 thank you
