According to Craig Fishel, Public Relations Manager, Southern Division, The Home Depot:

"We are not closing the Okeechobee store, nor are we converting it to a distribution center."

Whoever did the demographics for Home Depot before they opened the store really dropped the ball. They are promising to get mobile home parts, but when? We need them now!!

Waiting for them to order something is fine, if you have the time to wait. Otherwise, making the trip to Fort Pierce was my only alternative. I HAD to change the locks that day.

The rest of the isle was filled with every lock imaginable for regular doors from two manufacturers. So, I still had to drive to Ft. Pierce to get locks (they also had the same single row for mobile home locks). Wake up Home Depot! Canvass your clientele and stock what we need.
One thing about home depot, if you ask, they will try to get what you need, they have it sent over from another store. Try this next time you don't find what you need.

I recieve via email updates on the business sector that deal with the construction industry. May 01, 2008 The Home Depot announced the closing of 15 "underperforming" stores and the postponing of the opening of 55 other stores.

Nothing would surprise me IF at the end of the first " fiscal " year , our local HD  COULD  be on the list of future store closings , regardless of whether they have a long term lease or not...Just  look at the state of the economy elsewhere...:(

must be home depot employee!

I suspect these rumors are coffee shop chatter fueled by caffeine, sugar and a disgruntled Home Depot customer or two., 200 or 2000 at least

i heard thru a reliable source (an employment center and employee in another county) they are considering making this a distribution center, not to continue to be a retail store.

plus they had to honor the contract they signed with the land owner, to have building complete and open.

that  was a standard answer from someone in managment!!

It's implausible that a company would invest millions in a new store facility, training, and stocking, then close if sales did not meet expectations 9 months later.  They are not a mom and pop operation, such as Locals was, and, with accountants and business experts in their company, they laid out their expectations in a multi-year business plan based upon much more educated and informed analysis than any of us are capable of.  That's the way it's done in major companies like Home Depot.  A weak performance, if that's what is actually happening there, does not prompt a knee-jerk closure of a new store, but prompts reaction in the form of changes in advertising, pricing, marketing, inventory, product selection and personnel.  These will be tried before they would walk away from a multimillion dollar investment and a long-term real property lease.

Inventories are done regularly in stores such as this, especially around the end of the quarter, because they are required for accounting and financial reporting, which large corporations must do every three months.  They also do inventories to confirm and update their computer inventory listings so they can react to theft and pilferage promptly.  I have a friend working in the store and, when we spoke in the store about 3 or 4 months ago, he was just completing a large inventory.  This is not an unusual event.

I suspect these rumors are coffee shop chatter fueled by caffeine, sugar and a disgruntled Home Depot customer or two.

i'm really confused about this. i heard that they (home depot) is having an inventory done this month! why they just opened in feb. is it to find out where they what to send the stuff, when they close? they are not meeting their quotas no one in this town is. WE DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY HERE! THE MONEY WE DO HAVE WE ARE NOT SPENDING, TOUGH TIME COMING! there is very little building going on here and what is being done is from outsiders. not many of the locals are working in the building industry right now! this is sad.

From what I hear, Mid-Florida was struggling even before Home Depot showed up and the economy got so bad. When I have gone in there lately, more than once I was the only customer in the store.  I think W&W gets a lot of business from contractors.

Most chain stores have quotas... I think they will take into consideration the economy as well. Of course that could work for or against us as a community.

BUT if they go we still have Mid Florida and WWW Lumber. These were here for us before and during the time of Home Depot...surely they will be after as well.

I really don't think Home Depot would go to all of the expense to build and open the store in Okeechobee if they didn't have more faith in the economy than that. However, I have been a little disappointed in the local Home Depot because they apparently let the vendors do the stocking and you never know if they will have something in. I saw a lamp there I liked and wanted two. But they only had one and couldn't tell me if they would get any more like it or not.
