We've had some car burglaries in the NW section of the city. The cars were unlocked and goodies were inside. Take the good stuff out and either way lock those cars.

I have one source that saw 2 Hispanic males in the SW section who fled when she started to follow them.

Lock it up folks... Pay attention and call 911 or in the city 763-5521 and county 763-3117.......

Why does there seem to be so much resentment toward the Snowbirds? I saw in one post there that someone alleged that Okeechobee was the only city around the lake with an influx of seasonal residents. If you would go check, you will find that not only is the permanent population of Clewiston significantly larger than Okeechobee....but so is the seasonal population. You can check population facts at city data on google.

I mention that to point out how well we all get along with our seasonal visitors. In today's economic climate, we are glad to have every dime possible spent in "America's Sweetest Town". Those folks rarely cause any problem for us. If you really don't care to have the ones up at the North end of the lake....send them on down. We'll make room for them and gladly accept their money.

Take it easy on those old folks. You too "if you're lucky" will be old one day.

I prefer a alarm system. But I don't like motion detectors for the alarm because a bug can set it off crossing the motion detector I don't want and never had any flase alarms. Guns should be in a safe like mine that weighs 450lbs and is bolted down to 3 feet of concrete with 8- 1/2 inch grade 8 bolts. I also have motion lights everywhere, but not the cheep ones that go off for no reason.

I never liked the motion detectors either. Way too many false alarms. We've actually had cases proven by the alarm companies that hanging signs in stores have set off the motion alarms as they moved or swung because the AC came on.

I like lights, good neighbors and family watching and checking. That safe is a great idea. It may be too expensive for a lot of people on fixed or low incomes. It's certainly cheaper than loosing the guns though...

2. Lock everything up. Put the jewels and guns at a friend's home. (One that you REEEEALLY trust)

3. Before leaving temporarily cancel your paper subscriptions and have the mail held at the Post Office (763-3616).

4. OR Have a trusted neighbor get the mail and papers.

5. Make absolutely sure Law Enforcement, a friend, a relative or someone has you cell phone so you can be reached while you are gone.

6. PUT A NOTE ON THE DINING ROOM TABLE WITH YOUR KEYHOLDER'S  NAMES AND NUMBERS AND YOUR NUMBER. If we end up in your home after a burglary, we'll find the note and will be able to call someone.

7. Put up security or motion lights around your home. (The bible says: Men love darkness rather than light.) GIVE THEM LIGHT - I like motion lights because the bad guys may not know about them and may run when they come on. Those lights coming on MAY make my neighbors look outside to see what's going on.

These are just some thoughts and ideas. You are all smart people. Think...

May I also suggest that you install a timer on certain lights in the home and that each timer is scheduled at different times to go off and come on.  I have close neighbors and there is only one person I trust in the neighborhood.  Ask someone to do a once around the property every couple of days or so just to check to make sure there are no broken windows, etc.  Also, make sure the fire dept. knows that the perosns of the house are away and that they also have an emergency number where you can be reached.  And please make sure your animals are taken care of while you are away.  Take your dogs and cats with you or put them in a kennel where they are well taken care of.  Remember, locks are to keep honest people out.  If you see someone strange in the neighborhood, don't hesitate to call the appropriate police department to check it out.  It could be your house next.

This is a true shot in the arm, good medicine and just great news.....

No one has anything to complain to the Police Department about except the northerners. GREAT!!!!

By the way... I let our road patrol know about the parking problems at Wal-Mart. They have been writing parking tickets regularly... Thanks for the tips.

Well well well

I see some of my fellow Okeechobee-ites are hard at work complaining about those people from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana - yah, the Yanks. Y'all take it easy. Some day you will retire and then you can live in Ohio in the summer and drive very slowly. By the way, Ohio can be a very pretty state. I was born there and grew up on a farm there.

Any comments about the fair?

How about that supurb parade tody?

Sad thing is, they really do not pay attention to where they are going. Now it is not just out of towners that do it, locals do it as well, but not as much because they are used to the environment they are in. I have had so many people almost run into me, just trying to pull out of Walmart. And I have gotten into the mode of driving through residential areas just so I can stay off the main roads to keep from getting hit by someone.

MLK day I had to go through the main section of town. On the road beside Okeechobee Insurance a out of towner drives straight across the road and almost hits me. Never even stopped to see if there was traffic coming down 441 because there a truck in the turning lane. I had to slam on brakes. Had I hit him, I would have probably lost my baby! What a jerk!!!!!

And people wonder why we get so aggrivated. We are such a small town, in the middle of NOWHERE and to have such an influx in the population is an extreme. They don't go to Pahokee, Belle Glade or Clewiston. They all come here. Truly it gets old. I am so glad I live north of town and only have to deal with it when I go into town.

We need to have a new motto in town like one in the panhandle had a while back "Okeechobee, come on vacation, leave on probation". So much stuff happens while they are here. Careless drivers cause more wrecks, more fatalities. And they do contribute to the local bar economy. Just a few more months folks, they will be going back home.......

And with any luck for you, they won't be coming back, right? Look, I know lots of northerners that totally fit the description you portray, but they are not ALL that way. It is true that many senior citizens are dealing with issues of when they should stop driving. It is a terrrible thing for them to face. However, when their offspring note that an accident is imminent, something should seriously be done. I am 73, and I can see myself slowing down on the reflexes. If a stubborn old 85 year old insists on hanging in there, his relatives should be stepping in. The other side from their viewpont, I assume, is the many accidents caused by the 16 to 25 year old drivers, which can be verified by the insurance records. I drive a big old station wagon and I have to deliberately park way to the end of the parking lot (which I don't mind at all, good for exercise) in order to try and avoid having it hit by these idiotic youngsters who love to scoot all over the parking lots as though they were out here on 75. If I criticize the youngsters, then I guess it is equal to criticizing the seniors, when they're all driving dangerously.

One more thing! Why do the Snow Birds have to leave their house before 7am?(because the are up at 5am and by 8 its already lunch time heehee) During the week, can't they wait till after 8am. They are in no hurry and have all day. So those of use who work and have kids to get to school can have a chance to do this with out having them in front of us doing half the speed limit. Or so we can get through a fast food place for some breakfast with out them crowding it. (well they gotta eat too although Mc Donalds at their age is a bad idea)I have gone inside because the drive through was lined up to the street. Just to have to stand in line behind a dozen of them each ordering just a senior coffee. Stay home let us get to work. Wal_Mart will still be there.(unfortunatley) Your not going to mis that $.25 item that some one else was going to throw away at the yard sale.(that they are going to try and buy for a nickel)

Well increased popualtion also leads to higher revenue and jobs. In my book as long as they are spending they can stay as long as they like.

I do question Southern Hospitality and why folks in Okeechobee cant learn a few things from the folks who come from Kentuckey, Georgia and Tennessee. Those are some of the warmest folks I have ever met. Family wears out their welcome but snowbirds keep me working.

While I do agree Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia have good ole southern hospitality down to a fine degree, they haven't the influx of the northern people like Florida does. Florida use to be like the states mentioned above, but then it became a big time tourist state in the winter months for the weather, fishing, attractions and it took a lot of Florida's southern Hospitality with it. Now, in the winter months, every where you go there is a lot, I mean a lot of traffic, and I think that's one thing that people who live here year round cannot stand. I know I can't. Most of the Northern visitors drive around like they haven't a CLUE where they are going. That's a FACT! They pull out RIGHT in front of you, (this has happened to me 7 times this year already, ALL had Northern tags, and all were old women who looked 80). Wake the **** UP already! Yes. Florida use to be all Southern hospitality, until it had it's fill of the northern hospitality.

Wow that is amazing. Everyone needs to be well aware of the fact that the Walmart cameras do not cover the entire parking lot. I will not tell which ones because I do not wan that information getting into the wrong hands. If someone is going to break the law, they can risk having thier butts caught.

I am going to assume someone called it is to the City since you did not call it in?

Now thats awesome to know that everyboby is in place to get the job done protecting my property. All of you have my deepest respect Thank you very much.........

You are correct.  It is not only the northerners.  But, to take a percentage rate, it would be fair to say that 75% are northerners and the other 25% are from Florida.  Now the other problem is that 50% of all of these people who are doing the illegal oarking, don't even have a handicapped plackard.  I watched one the other day in the WalMart parking lot.  He was around 30 with a 10 yr old son.  When I mentioned the law to him, he laughed and said big deal.  Now that's a good way to raise your child.  Daddy does it so why can't I?  Remember, children learn what they live.

Increased population leads to increased tensions. Wish they did not have to stay quite so long.

Oh and don't question Southern Hospitality, there is also such a thing as wearing out your welcome! ;)

And before you go off half cocked on the northerners I think they can be a pain in the butt at times too but give them some respect as they do fuel our economy here. They support restaurants, tackle shops, bars, gas stations, beauty salons, consignment shops even garage sales..Alot of businesses, big and small, in our community rely on their business to keep them afloat for the coming year. With out their support you would be forced to travel to Fort Pierce, PSL Sebring or somewhere else to do your shopping or find a decent place to eat as well as keep what few jobs people have in this town. In this dreaded economic time, be happy they are here spending their money keeping Okeechobee folks employed and be happy its only for 5 to 6 months. Count your blessings instead of complaining because it could get a hell of alot worse here with out their dollars.

Geez whatever happened to Southern Hospitality? Guess it stops at the Georgia-Florida border! Some of you folks are really hateful! Where is the love?

So you all know - we have multiple officers that write tickets in the Wal-Mart plaza and other areas... They do this between complaints so they are in and out, sometimes very quickly...

Thanks for the alert about the problems, I WILL forward the information today...

I think that is so funny. I agree though. Those areas with the stripes painted through them are not for parking. I guess I could understand if in the window they had the handicap tag or one on their plate, but half of them don't. On with the tickets!

You bet I'm pissed!!!   It is not fair that we as citizens have to give up what is ours for them to come here and break the laws and then get away with it.  Down at the VAMC in WPB, they have a policeman who walks the lot just to hand out tickets.  I love it.:D  Since then, those spaces have been "poled" off so they cannot park there.  Why can't something be done so that these no-goooders get what is coming to them?  Just 2 years ago, I was run off the road by some one from not here and do you think they stopped as they ran me off the road, into a curb, blew out both left tires, knocked my front end out of alignment?  No!!!  But, neither did anyone else who saw it happen.  Wish I had a hand full of tacks that day.  But seriously, take look as you are driving through the parking lots and see who is parked where.  You will see that what I say is the truth.  And, I WILL be taking pics.  I WILL call the police.  This is getting ridiculous when you walk with a cane and have to step from the side walk to let a golf cart go by.  I'm done with these yahoos who think they are something else because they visit us and steal our fish and our economy.  This town is not big enough for them.  They need to go elsewhere or pay their dues.  If it means a ticket, so be it.

What is the problem with the people from out of state thinking that they can park any where they please?  You can check any parking lot on any given day, especially Walmart or winn Dixie and they will not be parked in the handicapped spaces or in any other space.  Guess where they do park?  In the striped zones next to the handicapped spaces.  Now, I don't know where these people get off at, but, I do know it is stiff fine for parking in those spaces.  Those spaces are for wheelchairs and walkers.  Just because you carry a handicapped sticker and there are no places to park, does not mean that you are privaledged.  You are breaking the law.  You need to park in a space designated for parking.  And what the about the idiot riding his golf cart on the sidewalk in the Winn Dixie parking lot?  That is for people who walk.  They do not allow skate boards or bicyclists to ride on the side walk.  What gives them the right drive their golf carts on the sidewalk and then expect you step off the side walk so they can sqeeze buy you?  I am disabled.  I park where it is legal.  If you can walk to your car to drive to the store then you can darn sure walk from your car in the parking lot to the store.  Get a grip.  Those spaces need to be "poled" off so that these  DO-DO's can't get in there.  It is a 250.00 fine just the same.  Everytime I see you parked there, I will take your license plate number, I will call the police Dept. and I will block you in to keep you from leaving until the police arrive.  I will also take a picture of you and your vehicle with my digital camera or cell phone camera. You are not any different than any other handicapped person nor are you privaledged because you drive down here once a year to "better our economy."  I bet your tickets will better our economy.  I am tired of the B.S. that we as residents have to put up with when these idiots come to OUR TOWN.  Where are the Citizens On Patrol when these blatant crimes are happening?  They need to be patrolling our parking lots passing out tickets to these people.  That's one good way to boost our economy.

5 years ago I never locked my house, or car. Now I would not leave  them unlocked for no amount of time. I guess we call this progress. Our job rate has not increased unless you want minimum wage, just the crime rate.

Over a dozen grow houses raided, and one Meth Lab that was stumbled appon as the result of a traffic stop. I believe Meth to have a much greater effect on the crime rate.

We have gangs, and the police are wanting our help to identify them. How hard can it be? Go to 4 Seasons, Basswood/ Whispering Pines,Play land Park. Look for the ones wearing, or carrying on them the red or blue bandannas. Even then they are here and they will stay. During the elections one of the Sheriffs on the coast was boasting about all he had done against gangs, but the gangs are still there, and have not slowed down a bit. Bust one and the next one moves up to take his place.

I would like to thank the Okeechobee County Police Department and Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Department for their due diligence in the apprehension of the person responsible for burglarizing and stealing from my vehicle and several others.  If it had not been for the teamwork of these officers I might never have recovered my laptop and several other people would not have received their belongings back.  Please learn from our experience and DO NOT leave valuables in your vehicle at any time.  Our present economy along with other things going on in today’s society brings out the worst in people.  Don’t fall victim to this.  Be smart…Be safe…Protect your valuables…

I passed this on to the OPD Officers that were involved... Thank you very much, they do work hard... Bill Saum

Thanks to the City of Okeechobee Police Department, the culprits are already spending the night in the May's Inn. Way to go City Police!!!! I don't know how true it is, but I heard it was a group of women and they even had the nerve to bring a young child with them, on their "shopping" spree!

Actually it was a career criminal who decided Port St Lucie wasn't exciting enough. Thanks for the attaboy. Please feel free to let Chief Denny Davis know your feelings...763-5521
