if it was my child, I would have an Officer meet me at this place of business to retrieve the ID !!  If it had been destroyed they would  be writing me a check for replacement cost .  They have no authority to confiscate an ID, driver license, or anything else; if it was in question they should have called Law Enforcement.     ..... now if you get out there and find it has been altered I would have a stiff talk with my child;  nothing I hate worse than to get caught unaware  :? .

I thought of this, but only for a second.  If I can resolve this without having to go through Okeechobee County Sheriffs Department, well.....I don't find them to helpful on the occasions I have had to contact them. It's odd, I have never had an issue with the City Police Department.  From my own personal experience, I find the City to be more caring, more detailed and community orientated.

Having grown up in a very large family, with the majority of them being police officers, I am perplexed over the structure of OCSO......who knows, maybe because I was not born and raised here :)

And yes, we HAVE had a talk with our child, but you have to remember, most kids are raised to not question individuals of authority....it never dawned on our child to even question them taking it.  At 18, most children know that drinking and driving is against the law, drugs are a huge NO, stealing etc.....stoping on an unlit road if you see police lights behind you.. never dawned on us that someone would take away someones Florida I.D.

When I was much younger, I had places question my ID, and refuse to let me in, which they can do, but I never had anyone keep my ID.

What can you do when a local establishment takes your Florida I.D., saying it is a fake I.D.?  But, it is NOT a fake I.D.

Are they by law mandated to return it to the Division of License? If they cut it up, can they show evidence and return it to the owner?

I am none to keep on some one having my childs I.D.  not to mention, I don't think it was legal for them to take it in the first place.

Please call me tomorrow at 763-5521... I will be here from 8 am to 4 pm... You will not ned to identify yourself if you prefer not to.

Oh yeah, kids can use anything. Air fresheners, hair sprays, nail polish removers, permanent markers and believe it or not even whipped cream. Best to keep an eye out for empty cans/bottles, lots of plastic bags with residue on them and just the general know what your kids are doing things :)

Razorback75...YOu are so correct..When we lived in PSL at any given time we would have 12-16 boys/girls hanging out at our house...They all called me Mom.... We were the only MARRIED couple amongst all these kids..They came from broken homes and the reason they liked hanging out was because WE HAD RULES AND STRUCTURE...... They knew the rules coming in and if they broke them they were "grounded" from NOT coming over for a week..... The infractions were few and far between....... We had a great time with these kids and they all turned out to be productive members of society........... So yea I  guess it does pay to have the "house "

Diva:D

Y'all don't stop... Keep talking this through to each other... These children are our future mayors - presedents - pastors - teachers - plumbers - winners!!!

Keep it up and keep working at raising this villages' children... We are the adults... Only we can let them know that they are important to us... If we don't tell them the drug dealers will...

Only we can tell them they are loved and accepted as viable productive parts of this society... We have to win this war or our children pay... Keep up the good work...

There has been a lot of chat about juveniles drinking... It does not surprise me... I suppose that is a parents worst nightmare... We in Law Enforcement do what we can... However, I will give you an example of what one parent did. I personally know this to be true because I saw it.

When she dropped her son off at the movies, she drove away like all the other parents. Then she circled back and parked out near the highway where she had a view of the whole area and watched. When her son walked out - she saw him. Sometimes she would confront him and sometimes she would just watch. She did this until he was 18 and on his own. By the way, he now pays rent to her and still lives at home. He is in the union and drives back and forth to WPB everyday to work.

This parent took her responsibility seriously and took her own time on Friday and Saturday nights when she could have been out having her own good time. I guess a person would have to decide just what one actually calls a GOOD TIME, raising the kids or partying.

This was just an example - you find what works for you and know you did your best.

BUT --- During these holidays - KNOW WHERE YOUR KIDS ARE... SHOW UP WHERE THEY ARE OFTEN AND LET THEM COMPLAIN AT AND ABOUT YOU... BE ASSURED ONE DAY THEY WILL THANK YOU...

Since the advent of the alcoholic beverage there have been kids sneaking drinks behind their parents backs. There have also been people who cared enough to try to stop that problem or at least try to save some kids lives...

When you see one of the officers in this town, please thank them for all they do. PLEASE remember they have kids like you... Remember they have dreams, wishes and wants - just like you... Those heroes need your prayers and support in front of the legislature, county commissions and city councels...

They are getting the alcohol from somewhere, there needs to be harsher penalties for people providing alcohol to kids, even their parents. I've known people that thought a good night was getting drunk and still being able to stay quiet in the bushes while the cops are looking for them. Maybe someone can start a campaign where we put signs in gas stations, walgreens, and the like reminding them that they can call 911 if they see a drunk driver.

Aval: You sound like the perfect leader for such a thing. Call me at work tomorrow, 763-5521... I'll find out the date of the next Okeechobee Substance Abuse Coalition meeting. That is exactly what we do, sort of.

We help existing organizations by bolstering them up and connecting them with things to assist them in getting through to kids of all ages. Call me if you really want to help...

By the way, we do send underaged buyers into stores as often as possible and not on a regular basis. That way the bad guys can't figure out when we're coming next.

I'll pass it on. Of course you do realize that just like when we were young, the youth see that squad care and they stop whatever it is they're doing. WE WILL TRY...

laikia wrote: Bill I know your on vacation but could you answer on qustion for me when you return, I go to work @ 2:00 am on sunday morning, just when 8 seconds close down. My question is why does the city and county allow all of these people drive drunk, and why no arrest are being made for this? All you have to do is stop at the Racetrak store and you will see people who are so drunk they can not stand but a cop will stand there and let them get in a car and drive away, why? And yes I saw the DUI car in the paper, know one of the cops really well.

laikai:  Glad you saw the DUI - car photo...

I cannot and will not answer for any Officer who would "allow all these people to drive drunk". That action is just plain wrong...

DUI... I have lived with its effects personally... I had a cousin, Bobby Beatty, killed by a DUI driver 50 years ago. I never got to meet Bobby. His family was poor, father a door to door vaccume cleaner salesman and my Dad had to pay for the funeral. That death in our small town in Ohio touched hundreds. Bobby was 16 and his killer spent about 1 year in jail... In 1974 Bobby's father, Robert (Bob) Beatty Sr was led at gunpoint out of the Georgia motel/roadside liquor - package store Uncle Bob ran - by a drunk driver who stopped in to get some more beer but had no money. Uncle Bob (Bobby's dad) was made to kneel down and was shot in the head execution style. That man spent 6 years in jail with gain time for good behavior.

We - Law Enforcement on the whole - do not allow DUI... In my career I NEVER LET DUI GO... THEY ALWAYS WENT TO JAIL WHERE THEY BELONG... My departments rules do not allow our officers to look the other way or ignore any crime. You mentioned 8 Seconds and Racetrack... Both are in the county and not in the OPD jurisdiction... I know factually the OCSO is serious about DUI, underage drinking and alcohol abuse in any and all locations that serve alcohol. Our personnel do occasionally shop at Racetrack... If one of our men let a DUI go or ignored that person, they were wrong and Chief Davis would personally want to know specific information. Feel free to call Chief Davis at 763-5521.

We LEO's are not allowed to sit outside of bars and watch for DUI's... I do not know or understand why... It is called "sand bagging"... So we drive the roads on the lookout for the driving that gets our attention and we catch as many as we can...

If you or anyone else see a DUI as you drive, call law enforcement... Okeechobee Police # is 863-763-5521 (Chief Denny Davis)... Okeechobee County Sheriff is 863-763-3117 (Sheriff Paul May)... PLEASE CALL US AND IF YOU CAN SAFELY DO SO - IF YOU CAN SAFELY DO SO, GUIDE US TO YOUR LOCATION WHILE FOLLOWING THE DUI AT A SAFE DISTANCE... You will be asked for your location, the vehicles description and your direction of travel. Feel free to use landmarks to describe where you are...

Hello gang

Back from vacation - caught a bunch of fish - We were blessed with good weather and fair bu 4 to 6 foot seas in Cudjoe Key. Our guide, Bill Welder, was extreme, well grounded and knows his job very well. He taught us a heck of a lot.

God gave us a beautiful view of his world and our mortality. Out in that ocean I was humbled by its massive size. Yet, I saw myself as the important speck HE says I am.

Okay, Bill, we SAW it already!!  Page 3, middle of the page, right above the dental implant ad, Friday, 11/7/08 edition.   Don't drink and drive.  Zero tolerance.  Good ad.  You must have taken the picture.  Now go have a fun vacation.

The Tow to Go Holiday schedule is as follows: Halloween, Oct. 31-Nov. 2; Thanksgiving to New Years Day-November 27-January 1.

http://www.aaasouth.com/acs_news/tow_to_go.asp

The local CTST group promotes this and has cards that they are placing in local businesses, etc. Pat at the library is involved in the CTST and could get anyone any information. They meet at the Okeechobee Annex once a month. (Community Traffic Safety Team).

Mr. Saum,

Do we have any agencies who are willing to provide designated drivers for our community?  If not, I have a suggestion:  I have been clean and sober for many years and I would be willing to bet that there are a few people who are members of 12-step programs that would be willing to take on this endeavor to keep people from drinking and driving and in the interim to save some lives.  If you can give me any any info on this, I will try to get together with some people to see if we can provide this much needed service.  Considering that there have been so many tax cuts in the world today, I understand that the "free towing" for those that have had too much to drink, has been taken away.  If we could get together with the business owners to see if these persons can leave their vehicles parked in their lots until the next day, we could at least get these people home safe.

It would be great if the court house just offered to place the candy under the scanner and we could see if there were any dangerous razorblades etc.. in the candy.
GREAT IDEA THOUGH THE COUNTY COMMISIONERS WOULD HAVE TO OKAY THE EXPENDITURE FOR THE EMPLOYEES TO BE THERE LATE. NEXT YEAR PUT A BUG IN THEIR EARS A LITTLE EARLIER. TO MY KNOWLEDGE THERE IS NO PLACE CHECKING CANDY THIS YEAR. IF ANYONE CONFIRMS A PLACE PLEASE LET US ALL KNOW.PARENTS: TAKE YOUR CHILDREN TO PLACES YOU TRUST...

However Sharp Objects are not the only concern.... any suggestions?

For those of you with little children who will gather candy during Halloween rounds.

Don't eat the chocolate coin candies!
The little chocolate coins are not safe for kids to eat this Halloween.  They are made in China and contain the Melamine that childrens deaths were related to recently.  !!!!!!!

With Halloween coming soon, pass this on to your family and friends.

Sherwood's Milk Chocolate Pirate's
 Gold Coins from China contain
melamine.

Good Morning Bill Our church posted this so I thought this thread might be a good place to share it.  Halloween has always been so much fun for the kids.

It would be great if the court house just offered to place the candy under the scanner and we could see if there were any dangerous razorblades etc.. in the candy.

 Gold Coins from China contain
melamine.

Sometimes there may be no traffic on 70 but the light at either site won't change until they both change at once. Just wondering because I've gone into the Post Office and mailed a letter and came back out to the light and the same cars were waiting for the light to change when I went in. Strnge - isn't it. I will try to remember to ask and get you an answer. Bill Saum

Thank you so much for your time and effort to this forum.  I believe that we have needed a person with your stature to announce certain things coming up in our communtiy so that we can have "the heads up" as to when, what and where.

All of us also need to remember that Halloween falls on Friday this year and there will be a lot of drinking and driving in the county and city.  There will also be people driving in costumes.  This will definetely cause them to lose sight of a lot of things, including our children who may or not be not be out trick-or-treating.

Please use a designated driver.  If you are out there drinking and you don't have a sober driver, please call someone who can help you get home safe.  Not only may it save your life, but it might save someone else's life.

Good luck to all this Halloween and have lots of fun.  Just don't do it at the expense of others.

You are all most welcome... Please be safe through the holidays... Bill Saum

There is also a home football game that night and Senior Parent night, so the streets will be packed I'm sure. Everyone be careful out there.

Please be careful during the upcoming holidays. So you know, the Christmas parade is scheduled for Saturday, December 13th.

Please use designated drivers if you drink.

Please watch for others who do not and call 911 if you see drunk drivers. Guide the officers to your location and they'll do the rest.

Pogeys is in the city limits, so if there was an accident there -- the city police would do the report. How about it Bill? Any truth to this?

And your public safety question was.....?  Even if I did read the report and it was the same name as you wrote, I still would NOT know if it was that same unfortunate person who LOST AN ARM.

The Police Department (my department) IS NOT compiling a data base about anything to do with any news paper or this newszap.com public forum. Why would we?

I am here to attempt to answer your questions and calm your fears with common sense, truthfull  responses. That is all.

Say you need to call 911 from an out of state cell phone #, how would they know where you really are? My granny is here visiting from Tennessee and she has a cell phone from there, what if she needed to call 911 for some reason?

We use the enhanced 911 system. With that system the call is tracked to the nearest tower. The call is also recorded here at the Police Department. The system does not track or pin point the exact location on any cell phone.

When your call is answered you should: Give your LOCATION - CELL PHONE NUMBER INCLUDING AREA CODE, YOUR NAME AND THE DESCRIPTION OF YOUR VEHICLE. Do this in this order.

First give your location as best as you can. Use landmarks if need be. We will do our best to figure out where you are.

KEEP CALM SPEAK SLOWLY AND CLEARLY

Next give your cell phone number with area code so we can try to call you back if disconnected.

KEEP CALM SPEAK SLOWLY AND CLEARLY - IF WE CANNOT UNDERSTAND YOU WE CANNOT HELP YOU.....!

Next give your name and home state so we know who we are looking for and can look up your driver's license information. This is why it is so very important to keep it current. It you can't communicate, it is of utmost importance that we be able to find someone who knows or is related to you.

KEEP CALM SPEAK SLOWLY AND CLEARLY

Lastly give your vehicle or surrounding description. If you are in our jurisdiction we may be able to figure out where you are.

I hope this helped.

Also: If you would like you can call the Police Department asking for me or Glenda and we can document information about your visiting loved one. We will need their full name, date of birth, state of origin, any medical conditions and where they are staying in Okeechobee. PLEASE ASK YOUR LOVED ONE IF HE/SHE WANTS THIS INFORMATION SHARED. IF THEY DO NOT --- WRITE IT DOWN AT HOME AND HAVE IT READY TO USE (TAPE IT TO THE SIDE OF YOUR FRIDGE)

That is what it says on my cell phone provider frequently asked questions. This is especially important as well due to the number portability that exists now too.

I HOPE I ANSWERED YOUR QUESTIONS WHEN I ANSWERED SOUTHER GROWN'S QUESTIONS.

opdbillsaum wrote: wantingtoknowwhy wrote: and why would this have a horrific effect on retirement again??....im not sure i understood that part....6 yrs vested.    maybe horrific on some but not all.
My answer to you:

Take an officer such as myself who has 23 years into their 25 year retirement. Now consolidation occures. How COULD it be horrific? I certainly hope it would not be. The hope woud be that all would go slick as glass, everyone would be happy and we would all live out the rest of our lives without anyone loosing anything.

However, after a toital of 27 years in government service, I know that what if-s must come into the equasion:

So, WHAT IF the Sheriff's Office chose that they did not need me, how do I get the last two years of my retirement??? I don't... Now I work somewhere until I am 65 or 70 instead of being able to retire at 52. That is a possiblity and a very real fear for some.

The unknowns are WHAT IS scary for many including myself. The unknowns SHOULD BE SCARY for all of us. Consolidation is an extremely huge move.

WHAT IT once you have it you don't like it? It's even more expensive to get it back. These days nothing gets cheaper with time.

Also, remember that things are the way they are usually because it works. The way things are now works very well. I hope I've made it a little clearer for you.

Lead Detective Saum, thank you for your opinion.  in viewing your response, it appears that you are stating just that: your opinion.  once again, how would it be horrific?  what are you basing your opinion on?  no job is secure; your own chief could terminate your employment tomorrow with no reason and no warning.   but once again, thanks
