Wow!Great idea, I would love it also, but most likely won't happen. How do we get them on here?

A parcel that MIGHT become a hotel, condo or subdivision but is now vacant land does not require any services, so why should it pay tax on what could happen in the future. Vacant land doesn't require police response to emergencies, no buildings to burn that would need fire protection, no people that might get hurt and need EMT service, and there is no additional traffic to impact roads. All the things that need tax funding are missing from vacant land so why would they be forced to pay for services they don't require?
If the idea is just to raise taxe revenue then don't quit with vacant land. Go after churches and clubs that are tax exempt. Churches have some of the most desirable land and the largest, most expensive buildings in the county, but pay no taxes on them. Why should some one who owns 4 or 5 city blocks or several acres and multiple buildings not pay their fair share of taxes? These sites recieve all the tax based services but don't pay taxes.
IF everyone in Okeechobee county paid the tax they should. Ag exemptions ONLY on land that actually uses it for this purpose...etc... Just think of the revenue it would generate.
We wouldn't be worried so much about having to cut the services that are NEEDED Like Fire, EMS, City Police and The Sheriff.
Our streets wouldn't be in such sad shape.
Our teachers wouldn't be worried about there being money to repair and build new schools or to have funds for Teacher Salary's.

I am paying taxes on $65,000.00 for my 1/2 acre. They are paying taxes on $2730.00. At that rate they will be taxed about $40.95

I don't think you'll ever find anything fair about taxes, it's all about which side of the issue you're on. Looking at the Tax Collector site it appears the previous years taxes are unpaid and they owe about $15,000 in back taxes. Where did you find a tax bill of $40 for this parcel? By the time you add in the school tax, fire tax and all the other taxes it must come to a lot more than $40.
I'm not defending this place, just trying to look at both sides of the coin. I know people pay a lot of money for taxes but if you had the chance to reduce your tax burden would you refuse it?

All I want is for the taxes to be fair and equal. I have 1/2 acre vacant land on the rim canal and my proposed taxes are $1000.00. Why should 12.8 acres of vacant land on the rim canal pay only $40.00?

Also, write her a formal letter as a concerned taxpayer. It might help

| First, I would like to say that I am a small business owner in Okeechobee County like you are. I have been reading a lot (in the paper and online) about the abuses of the "greenbelt law" in this county and the state. I would think that if you were to do some investigation into this problem and publicly went to bat on the side of the small tax payer, you could gain many votes from the small tax payers. These people are the majority and far out number the big land owners and developers. Your opponent is a retired rancher and probably sides with them. He and the current commissioners do not seem to have any comment on this subject. Let me say that I am all for the exemptions on legitimate agricultural land. I would think this would be a great way to fight for the little guy and against pollution of our lake and rim canal
