Branham turns in resignation
By Charles M. Murphy
Okeechobee News
Okeechobee will begin a search for a new football coach.
Chris Branham decided to give up the job after seven seasons on the coaching staff. He was able to bring the Brahmans to the post season for the past two years.
Okeechobee (8-3) in 2008, finished (7-4) in 2007, and (3-7) in 2006 under Branham’s guidance.
“I turned in my letter this morning (Monday). I wanted to give the school system as much time as possible to get a replacement.”
“I appreciated the opportunity very much. It was awesome to come back to my Alma Mater and do this, but after four years I have nothing left. I have given as much as I can to this program,” he noted.
Branham was one of the top QB’s in Okeechobee history. He went on to play college ball at West Virginia State. He was a starter there. He broke his neck during a game, which ended his playing career.
Branham returned to Okeechobee and was an assistant under Tod Dresser, before he was named head football coach.
Branham said he will not leave the school system and will continue as Dean of Okeechobee High School for at least the remainder of the school year.
“I’m not leaving the school system. It is not that I don’t want to coach anymore, I just don’t want to coach at Okeechobee High School anymore,” he added.
Branham will help coach in the North South All Star Game in Sebring on December 13th.
Assistant Superintendent Ken Kenworthy said a search would begin soon for a replacement. He noted the district was very disappointed in Branham’s decision, “I’m disappointed that he is stepping down after such an awesome season. We support him in his future endeavors.”
The search will begin in the near future. Kenworthy promised the district would get input from boosters, alumni, and parents while they conduct a search for a replacement.
“We want to find somebody who will do a good job, who works great with kids. We’ll also have to look at teaching credentials. We will do right by the kids,” Kenworthy added.
Kenworthy did not rule out the possibility of hiring from within the school system. He noted it will be the district’s job to shake the bushes because there are a lot of talented people out there willing to do the job.
“We’ll advertise all over and post it in the district and hopefully get the best person,” he added.
Brahmans named to the game were Garrett Madrigal, Kareem Jones, Nate Pollard, Sam Dixon and Alan Najera. Lonnie Pryor was named an alternate to the game. He could play if he is not named to play in the North South Florida game. Pryor will also play in the Outback Steak House All Star game next month in Palm Beach County.

Do you think they will give it to a local or do you think they will give it to a outsider???? I am pretty sure you have to have a degree in teaching. Does anyone know if that is a fact? I just hope that whoever gets it that they have the passion for football and the nohow to do the job. Even though we will be losing some great talented seniors there is still a group of very talented kids that will be on that team next year. I really hope that they give it to someone who has been around these kids that knows their full potential. I know that Ken and the rest of the school board will do their best to find the right person for the job. they just need the right person to apply for the job. I have seen a new erra of sports here in Okeechobee with the youth leagues to the high school level. First time State champions to District champions and district runner ups in baseball and girls softball. Of corse Im sure it would be football in the lower leagues if we could get anyone to play us in allstars. Then we have the High school football team in the mix for 2 years in a row and beating Clewiston 2 years in a row in our house then in theirs. I personally am very proud in our youth and coaches for taking it to the next level. My hats off to all of you great job and I will be looking forward to seeing more from you in the future I know you will not dissapoint......
