This has all gotten off the original subject of the mission trip that was botched by the youth leader.  Guess he is still laughing about it all the way to the bank.

Do you honestly think that going to church is a ticket to heaven? If you stand in a garage are you going to turn into an automobile? There is only one way to get into heaven brother.

Talk about an over generalization. For one, I think, though you don't know much about me at all, you should know well enough to perceive that I'm not really one to "blindly follow" anyone. I live my life as a free thinker, not as someone who has delegated themselves to be delegated, and I beg you take back that statement. Secondly, to be blunt, you're an ass. Just a few posts ago you talked about your "fully stocked" (food for the hungry?), "fueled" (money for the poor?) Prevost (and that isn't cheap either) and how I should watch where your donation money went as you drive by; and now you have the gall to stand here and publicly profess that you are one to "call on the sick" and "help the less fortunate," a little soap box hero in your own mind. Next time you intend to bolster your argument of your own personal sainthood, make sure you didn't previously talk about waving as you drive by the church, gloating your own cynical possessions which you have--oh, what was the phrase?--lined your pockets with.

You want to throw stones? Then move out of that glass house of yours, mack.

Your move. . . .

Before you fall off that high horse of yours...because I enjoy (and believe me I do enjoy) moderate wealth doesn't mean I don't give of my time and money.  I just choose not to throw it down a black hole to support a church or its pastors who don't practice the good stewardship they expect of their congregation.

Sumocat, based on how much you know about the church it sounds like you attend the church. If you are truly that unhappy then I hope you know that there are other churches.

On a side note, I do find it rather ironic that there was a mobile home stopped in front of the church a few days ago.

you certainly have a right to your opinion, thats what this forum is all about.

I personally am concerned with your statement of "From where I sit it seems their only achievement has been to line their own pockets  "......what exactly do you mean by that?  Normally when one makes a statement such as this they are accusing someone of stealing money for there own personal gain.  Could you clarify if this is what you mean.
Whooooaaaa!  I didn't say anything about theft.  More like taking advantage.

My apologies.  How exactly is the church taking advantage of people?  I'm sorry, I just don't get what your trying to say.  If you could use some examples of why you feel this way maybe I would understand better.

You do realize there is a finance committee who has to approve when funds are spent?

Take a look at Waterfalls' thread "Church donations". Have you received your letter/phone call yet?  If those two pastors are doing such a great service to their church would this even be necessary?

Are you saying that this was from the First United Methodist Church?

I kinda don't understand why you are so angry.  I mean, obviously you don't like the church.  From your posts you said you knew you would not like it after attending a youth meeting..........but yet your other posts indicate that you attended the church, at least for a little bit.

I know that some were frustrated with Rev. Bruce's time out due to an illness. But, in fairness, he had no control over it at all. Rev. Bruce day in and day out visits those that are ill.  He visits in the hospital, nursing homes and at members homes. Were the  church members suppose to turn there back on him, when he needed support and was ill? I just don't see how members could turn there back on a minister who through no fault of his own had to deal with an illness , yes it was long term but Rev. Bruce certainly does not turn his back on any church member who is dealing with an issue that might be longer than anyone would like.

My interaction has been mostly with the youth group, and with the church secretary, who will do ANYTHING to help anyone.

Possible you are one of the members who was upset, I don't know.  I don't know Rev. Bruce well, but he has always been kind to our family and was always there with kind words and support if we needed it.

I just think if you are so unhappy, that you could go to the board members of the church and speak with them. I am sure there is a process where you could voice your concerns at the church, and to higher ups outside of the church also.

Seconded.

Sumocat, it's really tiresome to hear you bash simply for the sake of bashing. If you actually had something to say, something intelligible and of firm ground, then maybe people would listen; but, as it stands, all you seem to do is rape, pillage and plunder any decent argument like a blind Viking, swinging your blunt ax at the nearest place of assumed importance, not knowing you're chopping at your own feet. These people you seem to insist are such vile people are anything but. I know them both not as clerical leaders, but as people, and I assure you that they're working their hardest day in and day out to improve the lives of those in both our community and others, erstwhile dealing with their own issues. To point them out as follies of the church is not only fallacious, it's insulting. But I'll tell you right now that you are certainly no saint and certainly no threat, so if you have a gambit, toss it, because I'm always ready.

Dice.

I'm fairly new to Okeechobee.  I did a little research.  This youth pastor volunteers a lot for the community.  Habitat, Salvation Army, is the chaplain at the Eckerd Youth Detention Center and is there every week.  He has helped hold the whole church together for the past two years.  The congregation is very much behind the whole staff.  As a church family SHOULD, they not only "chose" to see the senior pastor through his illness, but petitioned the bishop to not put him anywhere else.  He led from his hospital bed and done more than he should at times.  Pastors are people, too.  It's hard when you have that responsibility.  Anyway, the church IS a family and you don't boot out the father or mother when they are ill or when they make an error in judgement.  We are not talking about a CEO of a "business": a church is about spreading the Gospel.  We are IN the world but not OF it.  What Jesus taught doesn't make sense to the world.  CEOs make boocoos of money, make all kinds of mistakes that cost all of us more money than I want to think about, then get a really good "exit" package!  Why think about canning people like pastors that are doing a wealth of good in their personal and their professional walk?

Tata to you as well.

I got a good giggle out of that one. "Anyway, the Provost was delivered today." Oh boy, am I jealous. If it would have been a Prevost, then we'd be talking about the motor coach company dealing in the sales of coaches and recreational vehicles, but you, being the smart person that you are, must be talking about the provost, like you said--which, might I add, is NOT an RV--that arrived. You have to love zooming down those countries lanes on the "well stocked" head of a collegiate church, "full of fuel" and ready to burn with that college administrator.

If you still don't get why this is funny, look up provost; if you don't get it then, ask an eight-year-old how to use a computer; and if you still don't get it even then, stop by my house and I'll explain to the Catholic clergymen you've been riding on, who you have "fully stocked," where future donations went. I sense a touch of irony in your statement. Just a touch.

I prefer a cardinal anyway, it gets better gas mileage.

Later, muchachos y muchachas.

You got me. I misspelled Prevost and oh, what a sweet ride it is!

Choose carefully where you place your allegiance.  Not everyone will have your best interests at heart.  Many will be self-serving.

Yes, it seems I'm looking at one of them right now.
Now that I've made a maiden voyage on my "well stocked head of a collegiate church", I am off to NC.

Yes, it seems I'm looking at one of them right now.
Now that I've made a maiden voyage on my "well stocked head of a collegiate church", I am off to NC.

I'm well aware of the trips the youth groups have taken :)

I think I just wanted to point out that rules change all the time, one must check and re-check when traveling out of the country.  The link above and all other information I have found took very little to look up.

Is this a bash towards the situation?  No, I was just wanting to provide information to this thread so that others who are reading might avoid this problem in the future if they happen to travel or have there kids travel for school or church activities in the future.

The youth group at the church is a wonderful program and does ALLOT for the kids of the community! This too shall pass and will be a learning lesson for future trips.

My sister has taken three trips to London.  Each time she has to research every aspect of traveling. As the drama teacher for the school, her students travel allot for state and local events.

I'm just so sorry this happened, I wish there was a way for the kids/parents to recoup the funds they lost.  Whats done is done, but I wish there was a way to look into some sort of possibility that some if not all of the funds could  be refunded to the family's.  Obviously this was not a day trip to Islands of Adventure where possible one could afford to lose $100.00, this trip was in the thousands and I just don't think it should be written off without someone looking into trying to recoup some of the funds. If the amount of 30,000.00 is correct, I think it would be appropriate for the church to seek a legal opinion on how these funds could be recovered.

I spoke to my sister last night, she's a teacher and actually took a group of students to London last year.  She used a company that specializes in high school students traveling over seas.  She had six months to plan the trip, and said that it took every minute of that six months to make the arrangements.

She's a pretty tough cookie, and said ignorance of rules/law in another country is no excuse.  She made it mandatory that all students had to purchase travel insurance.

No doubt this was a huge learning experience for all.......

I don't mean to sound unreasonably cynical, and I can respect anyone who takes high school students on for any more than a few hours at a time, but the fact that she did it before (and last year, since a lot has changed) hardly makes her an authority on the subject. Please understand, I'm not saying she is wrong or right or judging her in any way, except to say that just because she says something doesn't make it necessarily so. Ignorance of a law is no excuse? Well, in the eyes of the law, no, but laws are not always dictated by logic, but a small group of individuals usually are (save for certain groups in extremis, but that's different). There are inherent differences there, not to mention an inherent problem with ignorance is not knowing (duh), which kind of presents a problem with illogical laws, don't you think? Our youth group has been out of the country seven times in a row, and this is the first time we've ever had any run-in. It happens. But I certainly doubt your sister has any more authority than anyone else who has been out of the country in the last few years; the fact that she went to London is only a matter of coincidence.

Later days.

But it seems to me from reading these posts that the young people who went on this trip have learned something important from their pastor. They took the experience as a chance to learn how to deal with unexpected problems in life. Sometimes all you can do is laugh about it and chalk it up to experience. Next time they will know better. And so will all of the other church groups who read their story in the paper. It is a shame their trip was ruined but what is done is done. They can't do anything to change that now!

We did learn from out experience and we will know better the next time if we go back, now all we can do is to tell others about the new policy so the same thing doesn't happen to them. That was a very nice way to put it.

The congregation has nothing to do with the youth? Who do you think supports their fund raisers? And who contributes to the facility they use...the air conditioned youth room and many of the donated items in it and the fellowship hall? Who contributes to the payroll for the custodian who provides the youth with clean rest rooms and cleans up after their mess?  And what about the lady who cooks a meal nearly every Wednesday. I don't have a thing against the youth program.  I just think it should be led by another leader.
Anyway, the Provost was delivered today.  It's full of fuel and well stocked.  I'll drive it past the church tomorrow so you can see where future donations went.
Tata to you as well.
