| My family really enjoyed the fireworks at the Agri-Civic Center. The best part was watching the faces of the children as they watched the fireworks. I want to thank the Nunezes for stepping up and making such a wonderful donation to the community by funding the show from their own money. That was a great show of community spirit and patriotic pride.

| We went to the fireworks on the fourth. We thought it was great. It was about the same as last year and the year before more or less. There were only two vendors that I saw -- one selling sno cones and one selling ice cream. Looked to me like fewer cars than last year but I don't know for sure. Certainly there were hundreds of people there. Some people may have been put off by the rain. However, at the Agri-Civic Center the rain stopped in plenty of time before the fireworks and the fireworks went up just fine. I would say the show lasted about 20-25 minutes and they had some really big, fancy fireworks. Lots of "ooo" and "ahhhh" from the crowd.

Who went out to see the fireworks last night? How was a the show? We had car trouble and could not make it out to the Reservation, or the AG center.

OK - got my e-subscription to the Okeechobee News so here is the story from this morning's paper:
Fourth of July fireworks show set
Fireworks show organized in less than a week
By Pete Gawda
Okeechobee News
An Okeechobee custom, thought to be a victim of the hard economic times will take place this year after all.
Thanks to the generosity of David and Anita Nunez there will be a Fourth of July fireworks display at the Okeechobee County Agri-Civic Center. It all came together at the last minute after the Nunezes learned on Monday, June 30 that no fireworks were planned in Okeechobee. They sprang into action to make the fireworks happen.
The gates of the Agri-Civic center will open at 6 p.m. with the fireworks to be set off at dark. Entrance to the facility will be off State Road 710. The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office will provide traffic control and Okeechobee County Fire/Rescue will have a fire truck on the scene as a safety precaution.
There is one important change this year that residents should know about. Because of traffic concerns, the sheriff’s office will not allow spectators to park on the shoulder of the road to watch the fireworks.
While the cost of the fireworks show was donated, the fee for using the Agri-Civic center will be $1,800. The organizers are asking for a $5 donation per car to help with this expense.
In previous years the Okeechobee Jaycees have sponsored the fireworks. Since they are a local not for profit organization, they only paid $250 for use of the facility. This year the Jaycees had difficulty raising money through donations so they decided to abandon the project, at least for this year. According to Mark Brandel of the Jaycees, the parking fee collected last year from about 300 cars will be held to help pay for a possible future fireworks display put on by the Jaycees or other nonprofit organization.
No alcoholic beverages or private fireworks will be allowed at the Agri-Civic Center. Officials of the center are working to try to get food and drink vendors who have come to the Agri-Civic center on Saturday evening.
The fireworks display will be put on by the Zambellis, the company who put on the show in the past, and it is expected to be the same quality and length as previous displays.

I spoke to Pete Gawda today -- he is the reporter for the Okeechobee News who is working on the story. He said it will be in the newspaper tomorrow so we will have it in print then!
If I got any of it wrong, we will get it right when the paper comes out in the morning.
I assume they will have to turn on the electricity so they can use the lights in the parking lot -- turn them off during the fireworks show of course. And people will want the bathrooms open and the lights and water on for that. Families with little kids waiting for the fireworks show are going to expect the restrooms to be available. And people probably will leave some trash and mess that will have to be cleaned up.
The entrance to the Agri-Civic Center is off State Road 710. From the main interesection in town, go east on State Road 70. State Road 710 will be on the right -- State Road 710 deadends into State Road 70. Go south on State Road 710 and turn left into the Agri-Civic Center entrance. I am terrible at estimating distances -- maybe someone else can give more precise directions!

County is going to get their blood one way or the other I guess.
I go suppose a fee is necessary as the grounds will have to be cleaned up because people will be sure to throw trash all over the place and leave their fireworks sparklers and things on the ground. I guess the bathrooms will also have to be cleaned so perhaps the fee is warranted but the county could give just a little now and then

| They had a meeting of everyone involved with the fireworks -- firemen, sheriff's office, county, etc. and as I understand it, the county is making them pay $1,800 to use the Agri-Civic Center grounds so they will be asking for a $5 per car donation to offset that expense. The donor paid for the fireworks and pyrotechnician and arranged for the insurance but now the county wants $1,800 to use the Agri-Civic Center parking lot and bathrooms.

| The fireworks warehouse in Okeechobee is not something they publicize the location of -- for obvious reasons. But Zambelli has a warehouse here and that is why they do the annual free community fireworks show in the fall at Okee-Tantie at the fall festival. Usually it is around Veteran's Day.

We didn't have to go to the ag center to see the fireworks so I don't know if they collected for parking or not.
Even if they did I feel it would not be nearly enough as it takes big bucks to put on a good fireworks show. There is insurance, pirothch, permits and of course the cost of the fireworks. I imagine that 50 thouosand is a low average for a good show and up until now they have always had good fireworks shows.

I thought that was why we paid to park. That was money donated to fireworks.
I know we always paid at Okie-Tantie, but I can't remember if we did at the Ag.

If you want fireworks next year you have got to donate when you see the firemen out collecting. This is how they get the money for the fireworks.
If you do not donate then don't expect fireworks. This year we were lucky and someone was kind enough to provide Okeechobee with fireworks but don't expect this person to come forward each year and do what you are not willing to do and that is donate. So if you don't donate your share then don't complain whe we dont have fireworks.

I was just reading an article today that MANY small towns are not having fire works for the 4th.
I am thrilled that someone came forward, I refuse to go to the rez and spend any money there. We were gonna head to Ft. Pierce to watch it on the water.
It was very, very kind of the person (s) who is doing this!

i also would like to thank who ever is resposible for us having fire works this 4th of july . i was so embarrassed to tell family and freind s that our town wa snot having them this year what a shame that there was not going to be any kind of celebration of our country in our town . i know things are tough for everyone but when i heard of other small towns having celebrations i could not figure out why we sat on our thumbs and would not want to do any thing . this town can pull together and help each other that is what it is all about but for some reason we sit idle and do nothing . it is bad enough there is nothing here for the kids for the summer and you want to take away the celebration of our country ! it is a time for family and celebration for what our boys over seas is fighting for it is a time for family barbecues and then off load up the car and go watch the fire works in our town . thank You again for whom ever it was who came forward for us to celebrate !

So those who don't want to travel out of town will have a local fireworks show, thanks to a private donor.
Apparently they found a licensed pyrotechnican and the fireworks company that has a warehouse in Okeechobee had plenty of shells to sell them. Pete said he will have details for a story in the Friday paper.
Fireworks will be at the Agri-Civic Center -- same as last two years. Enter off SR 710.
It made todays paper.

the south side of the arena. the police will be there directing where to go, it is a wonderful gathering with $50,000.00 worth of fireworks this year.
don't forget lawn chair, there is no seating any where. Blanket on the ground works too.
There are porta-potties.

I used to be a licensed Pyro but my license expired years ago. It will be just about impossible to get the shells to put on a decent show at this late a date. We had to order ours 2 to 3 months ahead of time to get the ones we wanted also you will need at least a million dollar insurance policy it may even be more now before you can even get a permit. There is a lot of work to put together a show. The biggest hurdle would be getting the shells.. Since Okeechobee has every thing set up already

Can a pirotech be found this late to shoot off the fireworks. You do have to also have a permit and licensed piro tech to be able to have fire works

| There are probably hundreds of people who don't have any special plans or who couldn't afford to go out of town. If someone wants to donate the fireworks, I think they will draw a crowd.

I just posed on another thread, according to Pete Gawda's blog, they may have fireworks locally after all. I spoke to Pete today and he told me that apparently a private donor is trying to make it happen.

You turn left onto CR721 coming west on 70 at the flashing light, or you turn right onto CR721 off of SR78 heading west from Chobee. The rez is about 3 miles from Lakeport on CR721 from 78, and about 15 miles on CR721 from SR70.
Don't speed on REZ property, this will be your only warning.

Indian Reservation, turn on the same road to the left, going out 70 west) as if going to the indian rodeo arena, the casino, Josiah restaurant. There is a church right on the left hand side corner too. to use as a land mark.

Go out 70 W,,, or 78 W drive for about 20 miles on either and look for the signs. On 70W there will be a flashing light. Out 78 W you turn in Lake Port there are signs.
