In years past they did not pay as much because the teachers did not have to be accredited.
They use the ABEKA curriculum which is a home school type program. This keeps them from having to hire accredited teachers and therefore they can pay less.
I know this because my daughter taught there for a while.

| I don't think it's as much as the public school teachers but nowadays jobs are hard to come by.

| I wonder how much the OCA pays their teachers? In the very distant past the pay was 1/2 of what public school teachers make.

| I think Okeechobee Christian Academy is looking for a teacher. I don't know about pay, but if you need a job, you could always ask them.

There weren't any lay offs at the end of the year. What are you talking about?
Meems is talking about the teachers who were non-renewed because allocations for schools were reduced. My school went from 26 allocations to 22, so four teachers had to be non-renewed. You're right we were not layed off, just non-renewed. =(
Why were the allocations reduced?
Either the number of students has gone down or the budget did not allow x amount of teachers for each school. I am not really sure.

Three teachers at my school moved away. One took a leave of absence.

I heard that one school had 35 applicants for 4 or 5 positions.
That's a lot of interviews! I think great teachers will be found due to the large selection of applicants.

With as many people as there are out of work because of the economy, I wouldn't be surprised if there were out of county and out of state applicants.
I think this is a good thing. The principals will be able to have their pick of good, quality applicants. I don't think where they come from should be a factor in hiring. It should come down to who is going to do the best job and who is best suited to teach the students.

| Does anyone have any new information concerning teaching positions? I heard there are over 500 applicants for the few jobs posted in our county. It seems teachers are coming from surrounding counties. Are the out of county teachers being hired over Okeechobee residents?
