| I may be eating my words on this not working I have had a lot of people asking me about his program, and a lot are saying this will have them buying a new car. We'll see. Then again if every one who told me they were buying did I'd be a little better off.

It looks like if you trade a car or light truck for a new one you get X amount of dollars credit toward the purchase. There is also something about heavy trucks, 3/4 ton and up I assume, and they get some other amount.
The question is - do you have to trade in the same class vehicle you are driving, like a car for a car or truck for a truck? Can you trade a car & buy a truck or trade a truck and buy a car or trade a car or light truck for a heavy truck?
You can not trade a car for a truck but you can trade a truck for a car. The vehicle you buy has to get better MPGs than the one you trade. I'm not sure on the truck for truck thing I'm gussing it depends on the trucks. Things are still being worked out and all the rules won't be set till July 24th. I'll know more then.

The dealership can not offer any more in trade for that vehicle because it can not be resold it must be junked. So the only people this will help are those that own a vehicle worth less than the $3500 or $4500.
MOST people that are driving a $3500-$4500 vehicle are doing so for a reason. 1. They can't afford, or don't want to make payments right now on a new vehicle. 2. They don't have the credit to get financed for a new vehicle. So very few people will be able to take advantage of this program. Looks good on paper, but will do little in reality.
It sounds like it is aimed towards people who are already looking to buy a new car, and need a little incentive to buy a fuel efficient one. Most people BUY clunkers because they can't afford a new car, then when the time comes that they can afford the new car, they look to trade it in for money. Reminds me of a lot of friends who graduated last year and have worked in their career field for a few and are ready for something better than their high school clunker. I see it as a start...nothing says that another program can't come along to help others as the economy gets better and better. These seem to be the people who would be the cheapest to help, so why not get them out of the way first?
