How can any one diagnose stupid? There is no cure. Hopefully this guy and the mom will get recover from this tragedy in their life. But, this poor little child. My God! A huge snake in the house, I will bet the kitchen sink, the mother is young and honestly did not have the courage to tell "boyfriend" to get rid of it. I would love to see the dwellings of every one concerned. Bet it will tell mountains about them.

On the Friday news they interviewed a pet store owner that personally owneda Bermise Pithon and they said that the snake looked way to thin like it had not been fed properly and was probably hungry. They said that the snakes do not kill just to kill but to eat.
On Saturday I heard that the snake hed been in a bag placed inside the fish tank with a piece of plywood over the top with a building blodk on top because it had been excaping during the day. This to me should have set off alarms all over the place that it was time to get rid of this snake or to at least feed it more or something.
Even if this snake had been released into to wild, which is illeagal it would have been better than the death of a child due to stuipditiy.

The snake was found on the toddler, chances are the snake was preparing itself to (at least attempt) to consume the child.
I had a friend who had a python once. This snake had a beautiful habitat which was 12 by 15 feet and 8 feet high. One half of the living room. It had a huge maple tree limb draped over a child's pool on which to climb. He would consume a full grown rabbit when he ate. IF he wasn't hungry he would have no interest in an animal introduced to his habitat.

| When I run across news like this I often think why, why would anybody do these kinds of things? The only answer I can come up with which covers it all is stupidity. Whatever the man had in his head for keeping a great big snake, (well, any kind of snake) is stupid. Maybe he requires extra attention for himself. Too bad, he is stupid. I once walked by a girl at a flea market, walking around with one of those pot-belly pigs on a leash. It was all for the attention she hoped to get from it. The main thing I noticed was this stupid self-satisfied smile on her face. Is there any way to fix stupid?

I don't understand why people insist on keeping dangerous exotic animals as pets. How horrible for that child to be crushed. The poor baby -- that is a terrible death.
The fact that the man did not have the proper permit to even keep the snake, and the snake was not secured in the container the permit would require just makes it worse. Not only did he keep a dangerous animal, he did not bother to get the required permit or learn how to properly contain and care for it.
It wasn't really the snake's fault. It must have been hungry -- which means the man also did not feed it properly.

Autopsy: Girl died of asphyxiation by pythonAssociated Press - July 2, 2009 5:24 PM ET
OXFORD, Fla. (AP) - Asphyxiation is the preliminary cause of death of a little girl killed by a Burmese python in central Florida.
A medical examiner made the ruling Thursday after conducting an autopsy on 2-year-old Shainna Hare.
The boyfriend of the little girl's mother noticed his 8-foot python was missing from its terrarium when he woke up early Wednesday. He found the snake on top of the toddler.
Charles Darnell called 911 but the girl was dead when paramedics arrived.
Florida wildlife officials say Darnell didn't have a permit to keep the snake at the house.

Just my opinion, but I think the guy should at least be charged with manslaughter. Neglect is not harsh enough!
