Did you read the Politico article, Helen?

The fact that 12 years ago Obama was still figuring out how to phrase specific parts of his policy for a questionaire before he was on the National stage is interesting, perhaps. They give the example of him asking about parental notification for abortion and says no...and then amends it to say perhaps for younger kids.

Sorry, but it isn't the smoking gun you are hoping for. Granted no conservative will now vote for him, but they weren't anyway, were they?

Well, based on the logic often showed here, where an endorsement by a crazy, fringe lunatic group immediately means that the person running for office accepts any and all beliefs of the group....Obama must want to lynch himself.

Amazing how every Presidential candidate is described as being the upcoming Anti-Christ...remember the "Ronald Wilson Reagan" being one because there are 6 letters in each of his names, giving him "666" and the mark of the beast?

I don't recall anyone taking that too seriously, but in desperation, people will do anything, especially when it is your last chance.

Well you decide !

All I know is when I was watching them side by side it was clear to me he did not want BHO there is was McCain.

I can't find the speech yet on you tube , but if any one else can please post it . You will see in the body language.

I couldn't  believe CBS actually said General Patraeus was agreeing with BHO , this being said it was set clean with in minutes of story.

This is just a little info , nothing to do with above

Without a doubt, Helen, without a doubt.

Why is he/his campaign changing the story about why he cancelled his visit to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany?    Now it is the Pentagon's fault?  What part of only Senate staff permitted to accompany him did he not understand?  The "advisor" he wanted to accompany him is part of the campaign, not his senate staff.

I find it very hard to believe that ANY politician would not relish the idea of pressing the flesh. Now...perhaps this did happen, but there may be any number of reasons for it, including the fact that there may well have been a time hack. I've seen pictures of Obama greeting and shaking plenty of people's hands in Iraq, and I recall visitors getting pushed through sites in Iraq because enemy action/scheduling/sandstorm only let them do a "touch and go" in the area.

Read this on the Smyrna Forum.  Nice guy the big "O"

I don ' t know each of your personal political convictions, and apologize if anyone finds this offensive.  I thought it was important enough to share.  This is Jeff ' s first hand view of Senator Obama.

Tiffany

---------- Forwarded Message ----------
Hello everyone,
As you know I am not a very political person. I just wanted to pass along that Senator Obama came to Bagram Afghanistan for about an hour on his visit to ' The War Zone ' . I wanted to share with you what happened.
He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof vehicle, got to the area to meet with the Major General (2 Star) who is the commander here at Bagram.

As the Soldiers where lined up to shake his hand he blew them off and didn ' t say a word as he went into the conference room to meet the General. As he finished, the vehicles took him to the ClamShell (pretty much a big top tent that military personnel can play basketball or work out in with weights) so he could take his publicity pictures playing basketball. He again shunned the opportunity to talk to Soldiers to thank them for their service.

So really he was just here to make a showing for the American ' s back home that he is their candidate for President. I think that if you are going to make an effort to come all the way over here you would thank those that are providing the freedom that they are providing for you.

I swear we got more thanks from the NBA Basketball Players or the Dallas Cowboy Cheer leaders than from one of the Senators, who wants to be the President of the United States . I just don ' t understand how anyone would want him to be our Commander-and-Chief. It was almost that he was scared to be around those that provide the freedom for him and our great country.

If this is blunt and to the point I am sorry but I wanted you all to know what kind of caliber of person he really is. What you see in the news is all fake.

Fred, spewing wrong information again, shame on you. The problem with your numbers are they are being quoted during election year politics and historically can be relied on to be very low.

The actual percent increase will be much higher and will be disquised in many different ways. All political candidates know that any mention of tax increases will anger most americans who btw feel we pay to much now. There is a concerted effort by many people to show the true amount of taxed income being paid, a true amount that included FICA, SS, soft taxes like DMV, fees for services, etc...

The latest estimates are most americans making under 35k to 75k pay 50% into taxes. Those making more pay considerable less. The lowest group are those making 250k or more pay less than 20% into taxes.

I only talk percentages as it is the only way to compare apples to apples. Some people I assume like you want to talk actual money paid and show how disparaging it is when compared with other groups. That is not comparable and is like comparing apples to oranges, not a good system.

I prefer to have everyone pay the same percentage across the board for all services. And to have the federal government start reducing expenses. The message that was being conveyed was that why should people pay more and have it sent to people who do not deserve any help. I see section 8 housing and then see the 50k to 75k cars in the driveway. Makes me sick. I do ot mind paying my fair share but I want it used for the right reason to the right people.

Well....given as you are ignoring the tax cuts for the middle class and seniors, and exagerating the tax code, I can understand your concern.

They do want to increase the taxes on the wealthy, it is true. What they are talking about is increasing the rate 3 percent on incomes of 200K to 357K, and about 4.6 percent on income above 358K.  If I make 250K (dream on) I currently pay $16,500 on the income above 200K; I would, under Obama's plan, pay $18,000.  Not exactly going to make me turn to Brie Helper...

Now, if you don't like income taxes, fine.  I don't like them either, but I find it a bit disengenuous to talk about the tax rate increase if you don't actually mention what the increase is going to be.

BILL'S WEEKLY COLUMN
Disrespecting Tony
----------------------------------------------------------------
If Senator Obama becomes President Obama, my taxes will go up...
way up. But I know neither Argentina nor anyone else will cry
for me, because I am the rich guy Al Gore warned you about--the
one that got all those tax cuts from the evil Bush
administration.

Yes, I am part of the one percent of Americans that paid an
astounding 40% of all federal income tax in 2006. According to
recently released IRS figures, about 50% of my fellow Americans
paid no federal income tax at all that year. My fellow
one-percenters and I covered for them. But, for some, it is still
not enough.

Senator Obama believes in "income redistribution," a concept
practiced by Robin Hood in Sherwood Forest. Like Robin, Obama
wants to take from the rich and give to the not-so-rich. He wants
to raise taxes big time on those making $250,000 or more.

That means that if you live in New York and earn a quarter of a
million bucks, you could be paying close to half of your income
in taxes. Even Robin Hood might find that somewhat extreme.

Helen...Of course he visited the troops...where do you get such information? And while you may be right on who paid for the thousands of red, white and blue for Obama's speech..can you show me that? What was pointed out, however, was that it was NOT Obama campaign stuff, but strictly Red, White, and Blue.

And, sorry, CR...I think what he is doing is best for America. He believes it, and a majority of Americans believe it. Now, we've been wrong before (see current occupant in the White House), but it is an odd feeling of having countries show their love and respect for us. Haven't seen that in a while with Incurious George at the helm.

Bix...you seem stuck on something; I don't get it. All the networks WERE fawning over McCain when they created this whole "maverick" thing. He had his time in the spotlight when he secured the nomination, and will have it again.

Actually, with the kind of week McCain has had, you should be damn glad the attention was elsewhere. If he did not have the nomination already, his miscues would have sunk him.

Sour grapes, my friend. Sour grapes. McCain struggled through a rough year on the campaign trail, beat out a host of challengers, and is getting his butt kicked. Now...McCain got a good reception when he was in Iraq, and that was covered...Obama got a great reception, and that was covered more, because it IS more of a story.
The popularity of FNC was disclosed this morning by Greg Jarret who is in Berlin with Obama.  McCain never had all 3 network anchors fawning over him.  An Obama steady 4 or 5 point lead is hardly getting his butt kicked.  There is time enough for many things to happen...one way or the other.

As long as you understand your perspective is probably a bit skewed...as is anyone older then about 25.

The military is young...very young. I'm in my 40s, past the retirement age of the average Soldier, and I KNOW they have a different outlook then my generation. A recent poll, for instance, indicated less the then 35% of these whippersnappers have issues with gays serving openly. I would bet that if you surveyed those you know, it would be significantly higher on this issue...right?

I will say that Fox News USED to be popular...but that is because it was the "old" military people (ie, people 35-45) who pushed it.  Not sure if you have any experience with teenagers or kids in their 20s, but often what you WANT them to do results in the exact and opposite reaction.....and that is happening in their political outlook.  Now, they are not going to be gathered around the TV in the day room to watch Tavis Smiley (who did get on over there) but they are getting a bit more information they they ever used to.

Getting back to the subject, however....McCain DID get the whole treatment when he was over there. It was on all the networks, and his walk through the market was covered repeatedly (gun ships overhead ignored by Fox News, naturally).

McCain had several trips but didn't get to have the 3 network anchors to accompany him.  The coverage was far from...fair and balanced. Jackson coverage may be equal.  Political coverage is not.  The military is aware that CNN and the networks are decidedly left and that's why the overwhelming preference to FNC.   Many recall how during the Clinton years, especially during the Florida "stolen election" debates, the Democrats refused thousands of military wrie-in ballots knowing that overall, they prefer Republicans.  Save for very few in my own unscientific survey, the preference among the military is for McCain. Even if Obama wins, you will see the analysis that bears this out.

Not sure what that has to do with the reception that he got, however. It was covered on all the networks. I'll grant that part of it was that it is something different or new, but I'll bet that you can't find a similiar reaction to McCain's past visit OR if he goes again.

And, yes, it is one of the more annoying things about being over there and watching the news channel...and you see how alike they are in their coverage of the same stuff. I was over there during the Michael Jackson trial, and EVERY news network carried it ad nauseum.

Sorry to burst your bubble, old chap, but Obama had reason to mention Fox News on his latest trip and commented why the military bases where overwhelmingly in favor of FNC.  It's popularity was so great that he thought that Greg Jarret had "hooked up" each base with FNC to the exclusion of CNN or other left leaning channels.

Let me clarify something.  Some military bases have a rotat6ing schedule of an hour of FNC, an hour of CNN, and an hour of MSNBC and then repeats again.  Some even intersperse the schedule with ESPN.  However, overwhelmingly, most bases, especially thiose in Iraq and Afghanistan, favor FNC.  Most bases leave it up to the base commanders (via the desires of the troops) as to what channels they prefer.  FNC comes out way on top.

Now I know that you, Fred, will make any attempt to spin this the other way. It may aso disturb you that in unofficial surveys, McCain comes up on top over Obama.  Spin away, dear friend.  Spin.

Now...having been in a few of those crowds, I know that the military can be a wild bunch, and any change in the routine by a visitor (be it John Elway, Robin Williams, Don Rumsfeld, or the RAW wrestlers and girls) is greeted warmly and loudly.  However, nothing compares to Obama's reaction.

Okay, maybe the RAW girls and the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders came close....but there were other reasons for that ;)

No one should have to ask anyone to take the more peacefull route.

Dont believe the propaganda about Iran. the bush admin is ticked with them cos they dont accept dollars anymore for oil. As is becoming a common practice. the dollar is no longer the worlds reserve currency. and Iran has said it will flood the market with cheap oil. I posted a link to Ron paul talking to congress about some resolution they were passing on Iran. let me sum it up for you. basically it said poke Iran with a stick until it does something that will justify the US or Israel to attack it. It was crazy.

So what you are saying is we need a third candidate?

Polls will fluctuate from now until November, with them getting generally more accurate as time goes on. I expect Obama to get a bump from his visit this week, and then McCain to get one when he picks his VP, and then both to get bumps after the conventions.

Voters Uncertain if Obama Ready for Commander-in-Chief Role, Poll Says
(CNSNews.com)
- Nearly 80 percent of Americans doubt whether Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama can be an effective commander-in-chief in a time of international turmoil. The same poll shows that less than half – 46 percent – think Republican candidate Sen. John McCain of Arizona would be an effective commander-in-chief of the United States military, even though national security is viewed as his strength.

Actually, they do read everything. They ignore the facts, try a few insults (you are doing a good job with the a______ comment...you fit right in with them) but when asked a direct question, either ignore it or go off on a tangent.

As for knowing everything....no, we don't. I freely admit what I don't know, but I do know a few things....and I know how to look up things when I don't know something.

I know that both candidates can run our country...but I think Obama is the man to run it. I won't mope or sulk if he loses, or beat my chest and dance on CR if he wins.

I know that President Bush has been a lousy President; I think he will go down in history as one of the worst ones ever.

I know that politicians play us like fiddles; I think Republicans do it even better then Democrats do. As has been said many times....I don't belong to an organized political party, I am a Democrat. The Republicans have generally been very good at exploiting our tendency to be as hard to herd as cats, and if they had spent more time trying to govern rather then trying to set up a permanent Republican majority, they actually might have accomplished something over the past 8 years.

He is trying to figure out what the ever antique Madeline Albright wrote for him.  NOw there is change for you.  She was in charge of foreign policy when Al Queda blew up the World Trade Center the first time.

I'm am watching BHO fumbling, He is just not ready to be President  now . He is speaking on foreign policy.

I see him reading a script and trying to act as he understands and believes what he is reading.

We I guess he will work out well if he is call to stop a inter city war between gangs, or to show how people can lean on the government for hand outs

Power to his people , I just wish I knew who he calls his people.

A close look at Barack Obama's career reveals it has been even more mediocre than generally recognized.
Before being elected to the Illinois state Senate, Obama worked as a community organizer and a lawyer in Chicago.
In his memoir, Obama says being a community organizer taught him how to motivate the powerless and work the government to help them. His chief example is an effort to remove asbestos from Altgeld Gardens, an all-black public housing project on Chicago’s South Side.
But those who were involved in the effort say Obama played a minor role in working the problem and never accomplished his goal. A pre-existing group at Altgeld Gardens and a local newspaper, the Chicago Reporter, were working on the problem before Obama came on the scene, yet Obama does not mention them in his book, “Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance.”
“Just because someone writes it, doesn't make it true,” says Altgeld resident Hazel Johnson, who had been pushing for a cleanup of the cancer-producing substance years before Obama showed up.
Rep. Bobby L. Rush, D-Ill., says it was Johnson's work, along with asbestos testing by the Chicago Reporter, that got Chicago officials interested in the issue. Rush, who launched an inquiry into the situation when he was a member of the Chicago City Council, says he is “offended” that Obama did not mention Johnson in his account.
“Was [Obama] involved in stuff? Absolutely,” says Robert Ginsburg, an activist who worked with Johnson and Obama on the problem. “But there was stuff happening before him, and after him.”
After three years working as an organizer, Obama could say he helped obtain grants for a jobs program and got asbestos removed from some pipes in the project. But as the Los Angeles Times has noted, the “large-scale change that was needed at the 1,998-unit project was beyond his reach.” To this day, most of the asbestos remains in the apartments.
Fruitless though his efforts were, Obama devoted more than 100 pages to his experiences at Altgeld Gardens and surrounding areas. Michelle Obama has said his work as a community organizer helped him decide “how he would impact the world,” assisting people to improve their lives. Yet, in a revealing passage in his book, Obama wrote, “When classmates in college asked me just what it was that a community organizer did, I couldn’t answer them directly.”
Instead, he said, “I’d pronounce on the need for change. Change in the White House, where Reagan and his minions were carrying on their dirty deeds. Change in the congress, compliant and corrupt. Change in the mood of the country, manic and self-absorbed. Change won’t come from the top, I would say. Change will come from a mobilized grass roots.”
Thus, Obama admitted that he accomplished little but that he was able to cover that up with fancy talk about change.
After going to Harvard Law School, Obama returned to Chicago, where he briefly headed a voter registration drive and then became a lawyer. While Obama’s campaign has touted him as a civil rights lawyer, “Over the nine years that Obama’s law license was active in Illinois, he never handled a trial and mostly worked in teams of lawyers who drew up briefs and contracts in a variety of cases,” according to David Mendell’s “Obama: From Promise To Power.”
A review of the cases Obama worked on during his brief legal career “shows he played the strong, silent type in court, introducing himself and his client, then stepping aside to let other lawyers do the talking,” the Chicago Sun-Times has reported.
“A search of all the cases in Cook County Circuit Court in which Obama made an appearance since he graduated from Harvard in 1991 shows: zero,” the article said.
Instead, his practice was “confined mainly to federal court in Chicago, where he made formal appearances in only five district court cases and another five in cases before the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals — a total of 10 cases in his legal career,” the paper said.
If Obama had virtually no impact as either a community organizer or as a lawyer, he was even more invisible in the state Senate and later in the U.S. Senate.
In both bodies, Obama had a reputation for voting “present,” thus avoiding controversial decisions that could be used against him later. In the U.S. Senate, he has missed more than one in five votes.
Only one of the measures Obama has sponsored as a U.S. senator was enacted: a bill to “promote relief, security, and democracy in the Democratic Republic of Congo.”
Contrary to Obama’s portrayal of himself as a unifier, on every bipartisan effort in the Senate to forge compromises on tough issues, Obama has been missing in action.
In sum, it would be difficult to imagine a more mediocre record. Most candidates for dog catcher have contributed more to society. Yet with the help of adoring reporters, Obama has managed to parlay extraordinary speaking and political skills into a presidential campaign built on sand.
The idea that America might entrust its security and future to someone who has never demonstrated an ability to get anything of significance done is scary.
Look for John McCain to begin exploiting this vulnerability after Labor Day.
