What follow is the content of an email I received:
Every year, around the 4th of July, I try to write something that celebrates our independence by shedding light on something that many would rather not think about, much less celebrate, but something that ought be talked about--something that maybe isn't talked about to the extent that it should be. This year, I've decided to share. If, after reading it, you decide to share it en masse, maybe by the 4th it will reach those overseas who are unable to celebrate our independence in the comfort of a home.
I dedicate this poem to all victims on all sides of the War in Iraq and to the families, both here and abroad, of those missing in action.
Bodies
by Robert Olsen
No body will say hello.
No body will greet you when you pass.
No body will tip a hat,
or nod a head,
or wave to you.
No bodies in Iraq.
No body will call your name.
No body will hear your cry for help.
No body will verify
your time of death
or noble deeds.
No bodies in Iraq.
No body will shed a tear.
No body will lie awake at night.
No body will eulogize
your willingness to go to war
as anything resembling
the comfort of a guiding light.
But somebody will love you when you're gone.
Somebody will conjure up a story.
Somebody will make believe
you're still alive
despite the fact
you're missing
and there's not much left of glory.
Somebody will say hello.
Somebody will greet you when you pass.
Somebody will lift a chin,
salute the wind,
and wave goodbye.
Somebody's in Iraq.
