In response to an article written by Carolann Wicks in the Cape Gazette Tuesday June 30-July 2, 2009 about another light on Rt 1 would cause more accidents then by not having one there is ridiculous. Here is a person with a degree in engineering and deals with transportation safety. The numbers don't show the real cause of these accidents either Federal or State. The problem here is not the light but inattentive driving as is more and more what is going on on all the Delaware roads if not elsewhere. Cave Neck Rd and Rt 1 is a very dangerous intersection and because of the growth that the county has allowed down this corridor without consideration for such problems such as what is occurring now has now made the intersection very dangerous. Yes there is a distance between traffic signals such as the one a Little Heaven to the one at Thompsonville Rd and Rt 1 just as there is between Thompsonville Rd signal and the next one which is at Rt 16 and Rt 1. Then you get to the next traffic light at Five Points. In Maryland there are two traffic lights that more then likely don't have the accidents that this state has accrued. One of these lights is just north of the 404 and 50 intersection in front of UMES. A seperate sign placed at a distance from the traffic signal warns drivers that the light is getting ready to change and turn red. It gives the driver ample time to slow down and stop. Another light is on Rt 301 East of where Rt. 50 and Rt. 301 join where there is a strobe placed in the light. We have now spent more money in the transportation sector even though posted speed limit signs have been placed along our roads that people complain that they can't read them or don't see them. Excuse me but once again this is inattentive driving and nothing more. As far as safety all I see is things getting worse. I am really surprised that there haven't been more accidents due to passing on the shoulder when someone is making a left hand turn or passing in a no passing zone because you just can't wait a few seconds for the person to turn in their drive or a development or whereever. If you really want to save this state some money take down all the signs because people don't read them anyway. I have read on this blog and other areas that  whenever someone complains about speeders the speeder has an excuse as to why they should speed. Something I saw today just tore me up when I saw a school bus pull across the south bound lane of Rt 1 just north of Nassau Bridge (Advance Children Transportation) pull out in front of two lanes of traffic in the Northbound lane making people stop. The individual was yacking on her cell phone while making the turn. I hope that there wasn't any children on the bus.
