I also believe that parents should have many options available to them when deciding the best way to educate their children. I think, however, our ultimate goal needs to be providing them a quality, free, public school as one of their options. I am also a public school teacher, and get so aggravated by the system as it is set up. I'm not a member of the AEA, I don't particularly like the ADE (and almost every other acronym in education annoys me as well) lol
My biggest gripe is that not enough people stand up for education... and I don't know how we can fix it.
Squished in among the many budget bills that were rushed through the Legislature this week (so Republican leaders could get it passed before one of their own took a vacation) are some provisions that have language that has nothing to do with fixing the budget crisis.
Someone tell me what the following things will do to HELP our current budget deficit....
1. Eliminating the April 15th deadline for districts to notify teachers of their job status for the following school year. So... districts could wait until the end of July to tell a teacher he/she doesn't have a job?
2. Requiring teachers who take a personal day and use it for lobbying activities to REPAY the district for the cost of their sub. Doesn't the state government get to tell everyone what they can and cannot do on a personal day? Go shopping, fine... heck, you could even go to a strip club on your personal day - but you better not show up at the capital or we'll make you pay!!! HUH?????
3. Districts must remove union representatives from the payroll. Okay... so now the state government can say to teachers, "You want to belong to an education assosication? Sure, as long as you're not a public school teacher."
Please tell me how these provisions (and dozens as ridiculous) will help anything. Then tell me why the majority of Arizonans either aren't aware of what our legislature is doing... or don't bother to do anything about it....
Frustrating.
