Rather than tying up this topic with gardening Q&A I decided to start its own topic here on the board. Anyone interested in digging in deeper into the subject of gardening feel free to visit http://www.newszapforums.com/forum7/93404.html

Yes we have discussed how the dump won't allow horsey people to dump manure at a reduced rate or work some sort of fair deal for them.
The manure is great for gardens and it helps everything at the dump to break down faster. A community garden would impact many areas of the community in very positive ways..

I have herd of a lot of ideas why we should have a farmers market. Now how about some ideas how we can grow all this produce. The first thing that comes to mind is the show by Mike Row called dirty jobs. I always love his saying that nobody likes mineur but everything that’s good grows on it. I remember a doctor and his wife we used to have here in Apache Junction by the name of Sieman. They use to live right here in Apache Junction on north starr road. I asked him how he kept his garden growing so well. This guy had one of the finest gardens I have ever seen grown here in all my years. He told me he hollowed out the ground and filled it with pure dry cured out horse mineur. (That means the yellow kind not the green stuff!) I have recently been trying it out here at my place and Ill be darned if it don’t work on everything I have tried to grow so far. Including making my cactus very fat. I have also discovered one other way that works very well. The first main problem in most areas of Apache Junction is the soil consistency is about 1/3 sand. Most gardening books your going to get your hands on where written by north easterners. They have plenty of moisture so they have to drain it away. So you get these books telling you to add sand to your soil for drainage. Not true in the arid southwest! I found by sifting out the sand using a fine grate which I used a microwave filter screen from a microwave oven door. I was able to sift almost pure topsoil, which held the water 75% better than gardening in straight Apache Junction soil. If your going to garden here you have to develop your soil to hold as much moisture as possible. If one were to adapt these measures along with investing in a General Electric gray water recycling system. Along with a good drip irrigation system. It may actually be practical to try to home farm in Apache Junction. Now that I told you some of my secrets tell me some of yours! Gollum: But, the fat hobbit. He knows. Eyes always watching.

Awesome azpublius!!
I've contacted the city about a community garden, we have their ear.
Is anyone interested in participating in an initial meeting with city staff?
Let's make this happen..

If anyone is interested, I came across this website (http://www.communitygarden.org) while doing some research on community gardens. That website highlights everything from the benefits of having a community garden to how to protect the potential garden from being uprooted through proactive and reactive letters of support to people or organizations.

I'm going to talk with city staff about possible locations to see if we can't get even a small one going..

| How about the Golden West Restraunt property right up here on Main Street? Since it changed hands, they hardly have any business at all any more. They have that huge parking lot there - maybe they would donate part of it for some sort of community activity. Might help their business at the same time. Just a thought.

Is there anything currently being developed on the vacant lot behind Diamond Shamrock on the corner of Ironwood & Southern across from the high school?

What a good forum! And a positive one to kudos.
Question , does anyone know what is going on across the street from phillys,
on 88
1st there was tent , then a canopy, then a travel trailer now a tent again ( I think) and a sign that says parking, just curious.
Thanks

If it wasn't so remote, I'd think some corner of the rodeo grounds would be nice.
Then....there's that whole water issue.
hhmmmm......

Did the leadership institute teach you how to bury your sense of humor in the garden?

Hey Christa
Maybe you can plant a money tree to help with the Huge City deficit! Plant it in front of the 2 million over budget City Hall!

Keep us posted on the community garden idea.
I make my raised beds out of scrap 4x4's and scrap 2x6's, 2x8's, etc.... usually scaffolding throwaways or concrete forms... very easy to make 4'x 6' raised beds with tall posts for wrapping in chicken wire/attaching shade cloth.
I'm sure I could donate one or several to the cause.
Joe
(oh...start gathering scrap wood for these and we could make a bunch!)

Did you fertilize them? You are not supposed to until they are 2 years old. Don't over water either.

I'm close to retirement and starting to wind down. I have work hobbies and home hobbies. I try to keep my family miles from what i do at work. I have started to plant trees and flower bushes in our yard. it is fun to try to figure out what colors go with which and keep a good selection as far as the flowers go. we had success with Hollyhocks and Iris and last year and now are moving into roses. We had a good crop of strawberries and was happy to see they will produce in AZ, hope the plants survive the summer. Our almond and nectarine trees are in bloom and hope they give us something this season. I'm having gobs of trouble with lemons, can't get them to fruit, lots of flowers, but nada. any help would be nice, love lemons. I never thought I'd be so into plants, but find myself looking forward to the next project. hope to add to the farmers market someday.

Janice, that is awesome you are bringing La Leche to Apache Junction! We are expecting our second grandchild in September and of course the baby will be breast fed. We have a lot of things we are keeping under the radar too. Please tell your husband that I want to thank him for serving in Iraq! My dad served in WWII and I have tons of relatives who have served in the military from then on. Rick has 4 kids in CA and I have two in AZ, so we are a blended family. We don't like to use the word stepson, stepdaughter, etc. in describing our kids. Anyway, Rick's oldest son, who I claim as my son, was in the Air Force and is now in the Reserves. We just found out that he will be going to Africa very soon. I can't remember the name of the City, but it's one of the places where it's extremely dangerous to be and the killing, raping, etc. happens on a daily basis. We just pray for his and the other troops safety.
We are going to attempt to start a garden in the fall. I will let you know how it turns out. MMMMM, fresh veggies, I can't wait!

Good post Deborah. I think there is a lot of good stuff happening in AJ! I like the community garden idea. I currently participate in a food co-op that has a drop off point here in AJ. Affordable, good quality produce is one of my favorite things. !
I have just become a La Leche League Leader adter several years volunteering with the group. I hope to start an Apache Junction branch next year so AJ and GC moms can get help here instead of driving into Mesa.
There are a number of other things we are doing, but we like to keep some of those under the radar and try to do a lot anonymously. When my hsuband was in Iraq I had to accept the help of the community and we are just paying it forward.
Around the house we are consumed with campaigning and childcare right now. Many of our hobbies are on hold. It has been fun, though.

I wanted to start a new post for all of the good people and things that we have in our beautiful community. I would love to hear what everyone is doing and want this to be a happy, funny post.
Christa, you are involved in AJPDC and I read your posts about you raising your grandchild, etc. God will bless you for what you are doing! I would love to hear more about AJPDC!
Rick and I prefer to support our local charities. It's hard for us to do anything physical, since I have Fibromyalgia along with several other illnesses and he has severe Osteoarthritis. I would love to hear about any other charities everyone else is supporting, as well as hobbies, etc. Maybe we could all get together and do something for Packages from Home.
We haven't even had the chance to clean up our weeds yet and probably won't be able to work on our yard until after the election. I haven't had a chance to put flowers in my containers yet. We are hoping we don't get a letter from code compliance, lol! We are planning on building our home in another year and FINALLY get out of this cramped mobile home! I am busy going through things for a future yard sale and have boxes stacked up all over the place. Weeds and boxes are driving me crazy, since I tend to be a clean freak and can't handle all the disorder.
When I'm not going through boxes, I love to "get away from it all" by embroidering, attempt painting with water colors, sudoku, crosswords, etc.
So, what is everyone else into? Rick and I want to get an organic community garden going and sell the fruits and veggies at a Farmers Market in Apache Junction. Produce would also be dontated to our local food banks.
I would love to hear everyone else's ideas. Let's make this a happy, funny, forum!
