Hi Katy,
Here's the response I recieved from the city..
Good afternoon Christa,
The landfill was busier during the free week. The City is unsure as to how many of our residents participated, but we did receive a good amount of calls regarding the free dump week. This opportunity will be offered again sometime in August. As of now we do not know the specific dates. They will be posted in the local newspapers as well as on our website. Thank you.

Katy,
I don't remember, good question though. I emailed the city to find out if anyone knows what the turn out was..
Let you know as soon as I hear back. I'm curious also.

| Christa - did they give any indication as to whether or not the landfill was busier than usual during the free dump week in May? Were many of our citizens actually able to take advantage of this opportunity given to them?

After listening to our city managers budget report this week a few more issues of concern came up.
The city has been losing money with the curbside clean-ups. Vice Mayor Eck voiced concerns if the city ends this program.
I'm wondering if this is something Neighbors Helping Neighbors might be able to recruit others and get involved with.
I believe citizens will need to step up more and more to help one another especially in the area of property maintenance.
Other cities have similar programs where quarterly groups of volunteers take on a section of the city to trim trees. remove rubbish, paint houses etc for the elderly, disabled and those needing a little extra help..
Just an idea..

You no bad, Christa . You've touched on a great idea. The next time the city schedules free dump week, maybe they could cut out one weekday just for that week and have it open on both Sat. & Sun. I can see where this might help out a lot of people who work full schedules during the week. I can also see where this might be met with groans from people like the garbage men and the landfill employees. But it's an idea to be explored. Maybe something could come of it. (all of this assuming the City will continue to offer free dump week for our citizens in the future.) ;-) It would be interesting to get some feedback from the City after this week is over to see if there was a noticeable increase in the number of people visiting the landfill this week.

(laughing) Whoops my bad..guess I stuck my hoof in mouth
Seems like I remember the dump used to be open on Sunday. Maybe it would be beneficial to be opened both weekend days and close one week day..just a thought
I heard city staff discussing how the quarterly pick up was costing the city. It sure helped the citizens especially like mentioned ones with no means to transport..

| Christa - sorry I goofed in the title to my thread. The free dumping does include today, the 16th, which I put in the actual post. (at least that's what has been advertised.) I agree with you that it would be nice to have a full weekend available for this to accomodate those folks who work all week. Maybe next time around, the city would consider this. Although having said that, they probably wouldn't want to do it on a Sunday.

It think it would have been more beneficial to have a week end including in the time frame.

katy8520, I have personally seen many piles of manure around town, more so on private property than boarding stables. Hopefully these people have some sort of trailer, or truck to haul stuff off. I hope they see the need and continue this on a regular basis. My concern is for the people, for whatever reason, not being able to do this. I personally helped a few people move stuff to the street, as they couldn't do it themselves with the old program, let alone take it to the dump. Let's just hope EVERYONE is able to take advantage of this, not just the horse people. As for piling junk and manure, this is going to have to still be the norm, WHO can go to the dump everyday!

Since the City discontinued the Quarterly Bulk Junk Pickups, citizens have been left to their own devices on getting their junk disposed of. May 11th thru the 16th has been designated as another opportunity for residents of A.J. to haul their junk to the dump for free. How has this been working out for people? What do you think now that this procedure has been in effect for awhile?
Some of the issues raised in the recent "Horse Boarding" thread could carry over to this thread, such as manure piles and junk piles in yards. When the City was doing the Quarterly pickups, it was common practice for citizens and horse owners to simply pile their manure and junk somewhere on their property and then transfer it to the curb for the Citywide pickup. The City apparently had no problem with this and things seemed to run smoothly.
Without referring to any specific property, it will be interesting to see how many of the current piles disappear after the free dump week is over. What do you think? How has this affected you? Are any of you having a problem getting your junk disposed of? Let's hear from our citizens on this issue.
