Obama Won't Release Data On Clunkers Program

Tuesday, August 4, 2009 12:55 PM

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration is refusing to release government records on its "cash for clunkers" rebate program that would substantiate _ or undercut _ claims of its success.

President Barack Obama wants $2 billion more to boost car sales, days after the first $1 billion was made available. Obama has promised greater transparency, but Transportation Department officials say they don't have time to turn over sales data provided by car dealers.

The limited information shows most buyers are not picking Ford, Chrysler or General Motors vehicles, and six of the top 10 vehicles purchased are Honda, Toyota and Hyundai. The Associated Press has sought release of the data since last week. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said Sunday the government would release it.

So, you think President Obama is like President #41 (read my lips, no new taxes)?  This President, Mr. M., is no little bush...he is a mighty tree.  I will not worry about new taxes for those under $250 during this term.  Next term, perhaps. Au revoir!:D

Yup, that Obama stimulus plan's sure working.....boosting business, creating and saving jobs, "putting people back to work", yada, yada, yada.

See?  Like this.

Over 100 Union Pacific road locomotives on a "dead line" (unemployed, out-of-work) in Ft. Worth, yesterday, August 2.  (Repeat this scene all over the country.)

Government To Suspend Cash For Clunkers

Jul 30 07:39 PM US/Eastern
By KEN THOMAS
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Congressional officials say the government plans to suspend the popular "cash for clunkers" program amid concerns it could quickly use up the $1 billion in rebates for new car purchases.

The Transportation Department called congressional offices late Thursday to alert them to the decision to halt the program, which offered owners of old cars and trucks $3,500 or $4,500 toward a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle.
The congressional officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
Through late Wednesday, 22,782 vehicles had been purchased through the program and nearly $96 million had been spent. But dealers raised concerns of large backlogs in the system, prompting the suspension.

I think Chrysler's problem is that they don't have that many models that are eligible. The new vehicle has to get at least 18mpg.

We tried to convince our son to buy American this time around but he's set on getting another Mazda.  Seems like Chrysler's 2x the amount for old clunkers should have been tempting.  Not as much as I figured.

A dealer told me yesterday that, so far, the most traded-in of the "clunkers" are Ford Explorers and that almost 2/3 of the cars being purchased in "clunker" deals so far are built by foreign-owned companies.

Many dealers have stopped offering the program.  Why because they don’t trust the government to pay them.  If the dealers did the math, it amounts to only 12 cars per dealership (there are is about 20,000 dealerships in the United States).  Many dealers did that amount in the first day.  They say the paperwork is so cumbersome, that they are afraid that the government has already spent the dollars allocated to this program and they won’t get paid.  Now doesn’t it make you wonder, what type of accounting system did the government put in place for this program, so that the dealers know when to stop offering it - I guess this is just another example of President Obama rushing into a program without giving it the thought that it needs to make it run efficiently.  Maybe if President Obama would have kept his campaign promise to be bi-partisan, the Democrats and Republicans together could have put a workable plan together,.

Cindi, Look at the healthcare thread and read my post about the Australian Doctors and their similar situation.

This August, President Obama is renting a vacation home on Martha’s Vineyard. It’s amazing . . . it has a basketball court, swimming pool, apple orchard, and driving range. The president says he can't wait to shoot hoops, while Michelle looks forward to pulling apple trees out of the ground with her bare hands.

It is a lovely, lovely, place.  If we are lucky, he will invite us!  Not at the same time, though.:)

Lou Pritchett is a former vice president of Procter & Gamble whose career at that company spanned 36 years before his retirement in 1989, and he is the author of the 1995 business book, Stop Paddling & Start Rocking the Boat.

Mr. Pritchett confirmed that he was indeed the author of the much-circulated "open letter."

http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/youscareme.asp

"I did write the 'you scare me' letter. I sent it to the NY Times but they never acknowledged or published it. However, it hit the internet and according to the 'experts' has had over 500,000 hits".

I thought you might like to read the letter.

AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT OBAMA

By Lou Pritchett

Dear President Obama:

You are the thirteenth President under whom I have lived and unlike any of the others, you truly scare me.

You scare me because after months of exposure, I know nothing about you.

You scare me because I do not know how you paid for your expensive Ivy League education and your upscale lifestyle and housing with no visible signs of support.

You scare me because you did not spend the formative years of youth growing up in America and culturally you are not an American.

You scare me because you have never run a company or met a payroll.

You scare me because you have never had military experience, thus don't understand it at its core.

You scare me because you lack humility and 'class', always blaming others.

You scare me because for over half your life you have aligned yourself with radical extremists who hate America and you refuse to publicly denounce these radicals who wish to see America fail.

You scare me because you are a cheerleader for the 'blame America' crowd and deliver this message abroad.

You scare me because you want to change America to a European style country where the government sector dominates instead of the private sector.

You scare me because you want to replace our health care system with a government controlled one.

You scare me because you prefer 'wind mills' to responsibly capitalizing on our own vast oil, coal and shale reserves.

You scare me because you want to kill the American capitalist goose that lays the golden egg which provides the highest standard of living in the world.

You scare me because you have begun to use 'extortion' tactics against certain banks and corporations.

You scare me because your own political party shrinks from challenging you on your wild and irresponsible spending proposals.

You scare me because you will not openly listen to or even consider opposing points of view from intelligent people.

You scare me because you falsely believe that you are both omnipotent and omniscient.

You scare me because the media gives you a free pass on everything you do.

You scare me because you demonize and want to silence the Limbaughs, Hannitys, O'Relllys and Becks who offer opposing, conservative points of view.

You scare me because you prefer controlling over governing.

Finally, you scare me because if you serve a second term I will probably not feel safe in writing a similar letter in 8 years.

Here is a classic example of what happens to private enterprise when the government takes it over.  You can see where the health care debacle will go.  Competition goes by the way side.

Sunday I saw two different commercials regarding the "CASH FOR CLUNKERS" scheme.  One was from Ford who touted the $4500 cash rebate for your clunker which is exactly what it is supposed to be.  Ford did not take any bailout cash.  They play by the rules.  Good for them, right?

The other commercial was from Chrysler who did take the bail out cash and is flushed with taxpayer money.  Their advertisement was "$4500 for your clunker AND Chrysler will match it"....doubling the incentive.

Now if you had a clunker, which dealership would you go to?  The government  just gave them a huge advantage over private enterprise, they can't compete with them. How fair is that?

And why are we, the taxpayer funding this anyway??  How about the government just give the dealerships some tax incentives or allow them no tax for six months as a buyer incentive instead of spending tax revenue they have to borrow or print increasing our debt??  How long will Ford be able to compete against the government funded Chrysler who now has unlimited funds?  There is something seriously wrong with that.  That's not how America does business.:X:cool:

GGeithner Can't Sell House, Either
By SCOTT MAYEROWITZ
ABC NEWS Business Unit
July 27, 2009—

The country is finally starting to see some positive signs in the housing market. But don't tell that to Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner or the countless other Americans who still can't sell their homes.

After leaving the tony New York City suburb of Mamaroneck to take his new post in Washington, D.C., Geithner put his five-bedroom Tudor home on the market for $1.635 million.

That was in February. By May, he cut the price $60,000 but still got no takers. A few weeks later, May 21, the home in New York's Westchester County was reportedly rented for $7,500 a month.

"Mr. Geithner's house is a textbook example of what is happening in the market here," said Leah Caro, president of Bronxville-Ley Real Estate and president of the Westchester Board of Realtors. "Many sellers are bringing their houses on [the market], finding that they don't have a buyer for it, making price adjustments in hope of luring a buyer into the marketplace. In the case of Mr. Geithner, he had to move. And renting was his best option."

The Labor Department said Thursday that its tally of initial claims for unemployment insurance rose by 30,000 to a seasonally adjusted 554,000. That was above analysts' estimates of 550,000.

I have a question:  WHERE ARE ALL THE JOBS PRESIDENT OBAMA SAID HE CREATED AND/OR SAVED?  He rushed through this asinine/useless/idiotic stimulus package that did nothing but cost the American taxpayer their hard earned dollars and he continues to lie and say it was successful.

Too bad you also don't understand that the lemonade stand is just a metaphor.  You actually took it literally, which is par for the course, and once again missed the point.  You've been missing a lot of points on here, of late.  Bad sign.  You'd be well advised to get that checked out right away.  All the signs, though, point to your problem being incurable and irreversible.  That's a shame.  Good luck anyway.

Ummmm..eagle eye needs glasses, methinks..perhaps from doing what he's been posting about...I think you were elplicit enuf, ya dirty ole man.

Let me see if I've got this straight...Little Font Boots doesn't like it when someone else tip toes through the gutter?  Say it ain't so, darlin'...cuz you're the big honcho when it comes to gutter snipes.  Hmmm, sounds like one of those "do as I say-not as I do" double standard kinda things...or maybe you don't like what you see when you see yourself in the mirror.  You know, when you get booted...those ugly words you've posted for years are still in the system.   Don't start act'n all born again now...cuz the die has been cast.  ;):D:cool:

Too bad you also don't understand that the lemonade stand is just a metaphor.  You actually took it literally, which is par for the course, and once again missed the point.  You've been missing a lot of points on here, of late.  Bad sign.  You'd be well advised to get that checked out right away.  All the signs, though, point to your problem being incurable and irreversible.  That's a shame.  Good luck anyway.

Ummmm..eagle eye needs glasses, methinks..perhaps from doing what he's been posting about...I think you were elplicit enuf, ya dirty ole man.

That's why I made my comment so pithy.  Unfortunately, as you say, the libs can't stay awake or avoid starting to play with themselves long before they make it to the end of most posts.  I'm sure too that many of them went into catatonia when they saw the FOXNews byline.  We gotta keep trying, though.  They do need our help, even though they aren't capable to appreciate it.  :D

Glad you moved on to lemonage sales...another thing you're wrong about is your assumption we either watch or care about a Faux news headline.  Time for your....lemonade?

Lemonade --- Obama Style
Love it!  (Hannity just featured it too.)

One improvement, in the name of consistency and accuracy only: the price for those with incomes below $25K (or $88K if you follow the SCHIP income eligibility standard) might have better been ($0.25) -- in the name of "wealth redistribution", of course.

LOL :D

P.S.  For the libs and left-wingers who don't know what ($0.25) means, it means the lemonade stand will pay those people 25 cents for each lemonade they take.  (Note: there's no limit)  The 25 cents come from the higher prices the "rich" people have to pay for their lemonades.  If not enough rich people buy lemonade, the lemonade stand will "mint" its own quarters so the poor people can get all the lemonade (and quarters) they want.

Unfortunately, with all the quarters the lemonade stand has had to "mint" (because all the rich people have chosen to stop at a cheaper stand down the road), the quarters have become worth less and less.  Thus, the lemonade stand has had to increase the 25 cents it pays to the poor people for each of their lemonades to 50 cents (meaning it has to "mint" twice as many quarters), and all the prices it charges to the rich have had to be doubled to try to cover the demand for the lemonade subsidy.  Some call this inflation, but, as Al Franken has said, "That's OK"

The stimulus bill "includes help for those hardest hit by our economic crisis," President Obama promised when he signed the bill into law on Feb. 17. "As a whole, this plan will help poor and working Americans."

But FOXNews.com has analyzed data tracking how the stimulus money is being given out across the 50 states and the District of Columbia, and it has found a perverse pattern: the states hardest hit by the recession received the least money. States with higher bankruptcy, foreclosure and unemployment rates got less money. And higher income states received more.

The transfers to the states having the least problems are large. Even after accounting for other factors, each $1,000 in a state's per capita income means that the state got $21 more per capita in stimulus funds. With a spread of almost $38,000 in per-person income between the top and bottom states, this has a sizable impact. High-income states get considerably more stimulus money.

States with higher bankruptcy rates got a lot less, not more, money -- roughly $86 less per person for each percentage point increase in the state's bankruptcy rate. States with higher foreclosure rates were treated very similarly, losing $82 per person for each one percentage point more of the people suffering foreclosures.

The spending data come from two reliable sources: the Wall Street Journal and the Federal government's Recovery.gov. On June 30, the Wall Street Journal published data on stimulus spending by state for seven categories of social spending (education, HUD, health, crime fighting, job training, arts, and food and farming) and eight categories of infrastructure spending (transportation, water, energy, military, veterans, government, outdoors, and emergency shelters). The Journal's data allow a comparison by each category of government spending. Their total accounts for $195 billion out of the $787 billion that will be spent on the stimulus. Out of this money, the amounts vary a lot across the nation, with the very lowest, a mere $504 per capita in Florida, to the highest, at $3,712 per capita in D.C.

If one relies on the Recovery.gov accounts instead, which, as of July 8, reported $218 billion of spending but without the detailed breakdown provided by the Journal, the bottom line is the same: the money is not going to the states hardest hit by the recession or to the poorest states.

Now I get it! This is what he means when he says "I won".  He really means, "screw you!"  "He's all of our President"? Sure. ;)

This article is too long for liberals to digest. Attention Deficit Syndrome , you know.
